Description

Here is an absolutely revelatory acetate from Manhattan’s Century Sound studios, containing a full, undocumented LP by Flora Purim and what sounds like an all-star cast of players. Only one of these ten tracks has been released: the 1968 single “Why Can’t I Cry.” All of the others have never been released and were in fact previously unknown to exist. They include:

  • An unreleased studio version of “Sandalia Dela,” which Flora had performed live with Stan Getz, but was previously not known to have recorded herself.
  • Terrific, unreleased versions of Marcos Valle’s “The Crickets Sing for Anamaria” and Edu Lobo’s “Upa Neguinho,” neither of which she is known to have recorded otherwise. 
  • An unknown and unreleased version of Little Anthony’s soul hit “Goin’ Out of My Head.”
  • A completely different, early version of “To Say Goodbye” than the one that was released on the 1974 Stories to Tell LP. 
  • A lush pop song called “Love Will Find the Way” that sounds for all the world like it features George Duke on piano.

The disc is in VG condition and plays well throughout with a bit of crackle. Luckily, the only track that does not play well is the one that was released on vinyl, “Why Can’t I Cry.” The audio linked below comes directly from this disc:
