Description
This is an auction for a 1958 acetate recording by the legendary doo wop group, The 4 Pharaohs. The tracks on this acetate are "The Move Around" and "Gloria." (This "Gloria" is the doo wop standard, not the one later recorded by Van Morrison and other groups.)
There are no labels on the record, but the song titles are scratched in the trail-offs.
I was pretty sure the group singing on the record was the 4 Pharaohs and managed to locate lead singer Morris Wade. After e-mailing him an MP3, he confirmed that the 4 Pharaohs recorded this acetate for Ransom records in 1958, but it was never released. Another version of the song "The Move Around" was on the 4 Pharaoh's Ransom Record 100. "Gloria" was never released in any form.
According to Mr. Wade, this recording was made in Hamilton, OH and the line-up was Mr. Wade, Leo Blakely, Paul Moore and George Smith (the original members), in addition to William Thomas as additional vocal, Sylvester Moore on guitar and Robert Tucker on flute and sax. (There are a couple of excellent sites that give histories of the 4 Pharaohs and their personnel. I'm listing the people Mr. Wade recollects being there.)
The group made 2 recordings for Ransom Records, 100 and 101. (The pressers of Ransom 101 botched the spelling of both the label and the group.) They made one recording for Esta Records (290) as the "Columbus Pharaohs" all in the same year. This acetate might have been intended as Ransom 100 since a different version of "The Move Around" is on that record, but nobody really knows why these particular recordings were never released. Mr. Wade went on to record Ransom 102 as "Morris Wade and the Manhattans." The original 4 Pharaohs did not record again until the 60's.
The acetate itself is in very good plus condition. It has static, but was easy to "clean" for an MP3. There are no skips, pops or other noises that would elicit a groan.
I believe this acetate is a very unique piece of recording history, both as an example of Ohio soul recording and as a great one-of-a-kind sample from a legendary early doo wop group.
