Harry Partch -- "U. S. Highball" 2x10" Test Pressing

A Musical Account of a Transcontinental Hobo Trip

Original 1958 private pressing on Gate 5 Records (catalog # Issue No. 6, TEST PRESSING, two single-sided records with blank labels and matrix numbers "J80L-7777" & "J80L-7778"), in Picture Sleeve.

Here is a one-of-a-kind item by American avant-garde composer Harry Partch, privately issued on his own Gate 5 Records. It is a two-record test pressing of the U. S. Highball 10" LP, both records have blank labels and are single-sided, with a minute or so of empty grooves on each flipside. The back cover has the word "tests" written prominently in pencil.

The normal Gate 5 pressing of this release has a single 10" LP with red labels (google "eBay 300114004240" to see an example.) This test pressing copy, however, has two separate records with blank white labels. The first record is a test pressing of side 1, its label has written in blue pen the matrix # "J80L-7777" and is initialed by "CB". The second record is a test pressing of side 2, its label has written in green marker the matrix # "J80L-7778" and is initialed by "MJ". The matrix #'s each appear in the run-out grooves as well.

Whether or not the versions of these six tracks on this test pressing differ in any way from the versions on the standard release is an open question. I don't have a copy of the standard release to make a comparison.

    U.S. Highball (1943/1955) originally for voice, adapted guitar, kithara & chromelodeon; rewritten in 1955 for "Subjective" Voice (Tenor-baritone), one or more "Objective" voices (mostly) baritone, kithara, surrogate kithara, two harmonic canons, chromelodeon, diamond marimba, boo, spoils of war, cloud chamber bowls, bass marimba, & bloboy.

bio from harrypartch.com: Harry Partch (1901-1974), one of the greatest and most individualistic composers of all time, was not only a great composer, but an innovative theorist who broke through the shackles of many centuries of one tuning system for all of Western music, a music instrument inventor who created dozens of incredible instruments for the performance of his music, and a musical dramatist who created his own texts and dance/theatre extravaganzas based on everything from Greek mythology to his own experiences as a hobo. Between 1930 and 1972, he created one of the most amazing bodies of sensually alluring and emotionally powerful music of the 20th century: music dramas, dance theater, multi-media extravaganzas, vocal music and chamber music---mostly all performed on the instruments he built himself.

CONDITION: Cover VG / Vinyl VG++ to NM-   cover is completely intact, still has flap on back, has moderate ringwear, mild soiling and foxing; both records are close to Near Mint, they don't appear to have seen much if any play, there are no spindle marks, there is some light cloudiness/haze from being stored inside old-fashioned rice-paper dust sleeves, there are no scratches, the records do play with some expected light surface noise, and each record starts with intermittent bursts of static which disappear within half a minute -- unclear where they're coming from and whether or not they can be remedied -- it's possible a spin on a record cleaning machine could bring both of these records up to NM.

Graded conservatively using Goldmine standards [G / G+ / VG / VG+ / NM / ]
