August is a big month for River.Dog Records as I sell a fair chunk of some of my rarest records, starting this week, there will be some big hitters of loads of genres, PROG, PSYCH, BEAT, FOLK etc. etc. etc.  Today there are such records of Legendary rarity as DOGFEET, some mid hitters too, like Vertigo swirl rarity Dr Strangely Strange's Heavy Petting (mislabelled version!), some very limited and highly sought after private presses, such as the extremely elusive (and lovely) TICKAWINDA, there will be Psych/Freakbeat rarities covered next week with such items as the extremely rare Yardbirds German EP Heart Full Of Soul, The Eyes UK single Man With Money, unheard of UK pressings of Linda Van Dyck (Seduction Song), to my knowledge NEVER released in the UK, and never documented, but there's a UK demo "A" copy (on Gemini Records) going to show it's self this month! And other undocumented demo UK psych 7"s such as, did you ever wish The Crystal Mansion pressed their often talked about track "The Thought Of Loving You" in the UK... well, another original yet to my knowledge undocumented, "A" label demo coming up this month! Plus where would record collecting of the 50s/60s/70s be without some extremely rare Beatles pressings thrown in for good measure,SOLID CENTRES of early UK singles, to my knowledge undocumented overseas presses (has anyone seen a South Rhodesian "Ain't She Sweet", with scroll Polydor labels and a tri-centre? I could be wrong, but I certainly never have caught wind of it on any forums!), Gold Label, Red Labels, Box Set, etc... And some surprises thrown in! Although some of the grades of these items this week sound high, I hope you can believe that I know what I'm talking about, as this is most of the cream of my PROG/PROGRESSIVE-PSYCH FOLK LP crop, please refer to my feedback if you are at all unsure about my grading "pedigree!" please refer to my previous feedback comments, each year I have a bit of a clear out, (though this year I'm doing more major titles than previous years!, this year, as with every other year, I have only had positive feedback (I have NEVER had a negative comment either publicly or privately about my grading), the only grading related comments I get (both privately and publicly on my feedback) are telling me my grading is too far under what it should be, I have tried to take this on-board, but I always want customers to be completely satisfied. But please check my previous feedback (from the past few months and previous years), and judge for yourself! I don't like the idea (though it has never happened to me) of people asking for partial money back etc, so if you find anything amiss with my descriptions then I will offer full bid price back (upon return of the item in the condition I sent it in- I fully record all LPs before listing them for my digital collection!), though to avoid time wasters I will put the proviso in that I will not pay for postage unless there is a definite mistake in my listing… I really hope that all sounds reasonable! This disc is in EX which means it's superb! (please check out my feedback and in particular, regular buyer's feedback if you are at all unsure of my strictness in grading!)
This, for those of you who don't already know is the rarest/most sought after LP on the Pennine label, from 1979 (PSS 153 LP), Tickawinda's only release, "Rosemary Lane", and it really is superb. The track listing doesn't sound so inspired, but the delivery of the 4 part harmonies and in particular the female harmonies, is superb really inventive and powerful arrangements. It is widely known that there were only 300 copies of this LP pressed ever. It was a semi-professional outfit of legendary status in the North West. One of the members, Jim, is an old friend, and lives in my home town, and is still active on the local folk scene. They were the house band for the legendary Rose and Crown folk club in Stalybridge, and in 1979 they went into the studio dragging with them another studio virgin, Clive Gregson, who augmented their studio sound with Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Bass, and Piano. (with those instruments it sounds more rocky, but this really isn't). The sessions were engineered by Paul Adshead at the Pennine Studio in Oldham, and mixed with Clive Gregson. Clive then went back not the studio the flowing year with Any Trouble, who were shortly after, signed to stiff, and Clive's career as a songwriter followed. However, whilst all 300 copies of this LP sold out very fast locally, the band didn't last much longer than the stocks of their one and only vinyl! Being semi-professional, their work/other life commitments conflicted too much, and they discontinued as a regular band… There really are some fantastic reviews of this LP available online (I've not found a bad one in fact!), generally speaking the general gist is that being so scarce this LP reaches legendary status in people's minds, before they've actually heard it, so the possibility of disappointment is very high, but if/when then people hear it they are not disappointed at all! Side 1: Side 2: John Barleycorn Rosemary Lane Coalhole Cavalry A Lyke Wake Dirge She Moves Through The Fair The Galtee Farmer Old Pendle The Weary Cutters Young Man Go Your Way Cold And Raw And The Band PLayed Waltzing Matilda The Blackleg Miner   Being that many of them were from my home town, and so were a lot of their friend's and family, most of the original 300 came through here, and one or two still must be in people's collections, I am in probably the unique position of a record collector, as I have access to examine 3 copies of this LP (including this one), and whilst they have all been cared for (friends and family of the original band etc.), this is the best copy of them! Really superb, CRYSTAL audio! I audio-tested (and simultaneously recorded) this LP, and it was one of those wonderful moments where when you put the stylus down on the run-in groove, and think you've forgotten to put it down, really it's THAT silent! The silences between tracks are completely without tick/crackle/static, silence in this case means SILENCE! it's a real joy to hear a record of this condition of anything no matter how rare, but when it's one such as this it's something EXTREMELY rare! The only reason I've given this EX and not EX+ (my highest grade), is visually there are  a handful (I mean it!), of the very lightest surface/hairlines, throughout the entire LP there was only 1 very faint (and fairly masked) tick on the title track in the line "and if it's a girl, she will wear a gold ring ^she will wear a gold ring…" (the "^" being the tiny tick), but honestly this is so faint, even with my treble turned completely up and everything else cut (since recording it I've tried the digital recording on all sorts of systems! I record it in TOP WAV 96khz/24bit) which any audio buff will tell you is very high (most studios use 48khz!),  though I do not have the CD re-issue, I cannot imagine a CD touching this quality. If there are other copies in this condition there can only be a handful, and I doubt even that, the audio could only be improved by taking out that very fait tick mentioned above! The Labels, whilst being very vulnerable black labels, only betray some faint spindle rubs near either central hole when angled towards direct light, this has clearly been looked after with absolute reverence! Nothing else on the labels, no stains/writing/fading etc. Beautiful! The sleeve… this is renowned for being a slightly undersized and very flimsy thin card sleeve, and extremely susceptible to wear… however, this is a beaut! Extremely crisp, edges and corners, you almost never see such crisp corners on common LPs let alone on one such as this! The spine is extremely crisp, and, if it had ever been printed with any text, then it would be perfectly legible, as it is, a perfect plain spine! The top edge has no wear at all either, beautifully crisp perfect! The bottom edge is the best I've ever seen come up for sale (better also than copies I've seen), there is the tiniest TINIEST rub along the edge, but still very crisp! The opening mouth edges are also perfect, completely crisp. Really truly incredible to see! The only slights to this LP sleeve are the very tiny spots of discolouration (mainly these are near the bottom edge, and they are mainly the little extra blots of original adhesive, which was quite orange!), Please check the photos! When I first looked inside and saw this dark orange adhesive I was downhearted and thought it had been re-glued, but having been able to check other copies, they are all like this (so clearly this is original!). There is one slight stain that certainly isn't this adhesive just above the track-listingto the far right of the sleeve (please check photos), really one of the best I've seen all round, and certainly the one with the best edges/corners! The inner, is the original (I've seen enough Pennine LPs to know what Pennine Inners of this period are, and this is one, this is also the original one I found it in, please note, that I could have upgraded for one of the other inners of one of the other Pennine records I have listed, but I left it to show you how I found it!), a poly-lined (still completely firmly attached) "British Patent No." Blue box "Plastic Bags Can Be Dangerous", style die-cut style inner. Again no wear-throughs very nice (slightly mispressed with a little bit of the blue box not being printed correctly). A real beaut! (By The way I have since stored the record in a Tonar non-static inner to avoid any future hairlines!) The Sleeve: EX-, (perfect corners and beautiful edges, a few very light and small stains- please read above) The Inner Sleeve: EX, again pretty perfect, a couple of handling indents, and a little original adhesive discolouration, poly-liner still holds perfectly. The Record: Visually EX, a few very light surface/hairlines, almost impossible to catch in photos! Only visible when angled right, into strong direct light  Audibly EX/EX+ (only 1 audible tick VERY faintly, honestly can't imagine there are more than one or two of this audio quality! Do remember to anti-static when listening!) Labels: EX- just some light spindle rubs near the centre holes, only visible when angled into the light correctly!
This is all round beautiful! A few observations I have made, whilst having access to 3 copies of this extremely limited LP. For the official record… Whilst some Pennine Records were pressed with slight imperfections in the vinyl, these ones seem to have used very good quality vinyl, no flecks etc in the vinyl.  It has been pointed out before, but I want to categorically confirm this, that, whilst the track-listing on the sleeve lists the side starting with the track John Barleycorn, as side 1, and Rosemary Lane as side 2, and this is the way they play (the side with the label saying "side one" on it starts with John Barleycorn, however the label has the track list for side 2, it also has a matrix for side 1- (A-1)) this is the same on all the copies I have looked at, therefore the labels must have been misprinted. I'm presuming on all copies (as it is on the three I've checked!).

My Grading system:

Based on a slightly stricter version of the Record Collector, Rare Record Price Guide system.

I Don't believe in Mint, I almost only ever hear it from sellers who don't know the grading systems, therefore, you won't hear me using "MINT". If an Item is sealed I will state it as such, but still will only go as high as EX+.

EX+: Sealed, or seemingly NEVER played, if EX+ were to ever spill over to an item that may have been played a handful of times, but incredibly carefully, I will explain this thoroughly!

EX: The top end really, someone has very much cared for this record, else forgotten they've had it! Again only played with reverence, and not played much!

EX-: Very similar to EX, but slightly more realistic, many cared for collections may have a few EX- discs in them, though usually they'll be those James Last records your Auntie bought for you and (hopefully) you've never listened to since!

VG+: Again a very well looked after record, though with noticeable surface marks/hairlines when caught in the light, the worst one may hear is the lightest, very occasional background noise, often not even this on many players!

VG: Same as above, except more surface marks,  and a little more audio background noise, though certainly not detracting from the listening experience. A good playing copy for someone who buys to play the record.

VG-: A little worse, still very listenable, and plays though fine, though might not be the end of the world, if someone drunkenly adds a few more surface marks to it one night! Background noise will be there in some form!

G+: "Good" doesn't really mean good does it?! G+ means it still plays though, though someone in the room, un-used to records (and probably born when minidiscs were already a thing of the past!), will probably make a comment about the crackliness.

G: You won't want to use your best stylus on this one probably! We're definitely in "filler" territory now, unless it's a particularly rare copy, this is a party copy, you shouldn't mind when this one gets a scratch, (you might not even notice!).

G-: If crackling gives vinyl it's "warm" sound, then this one is beginning to become a fire hazard! The likelihood is you won't catch me selling a record at this condition or less, unless there really is special cause (rarity/signed/mispressed etc.). 

I often won't even grade things lower than a "decent playing copy" (VG-), though if they don't play through or are warped etc (even if they do play through), I will mention "JUMPS", "WARPED" etc. etc. either in the title, or near the beginning of the item's description, so there can be no doubt!

I endeavour to be as meticulous as possible when grading, and almost always play test the entirety of every LP and 7" I'm selling (often I make an MP3 back-up of it too... yes I know it's obsessive), but I'm sure one of these days I will overlook something, or someone will have reason to question my gradings (so far I have only had the honour of being told that I'm shooting myself in the foot by undergrading! If an honour, that is!), in which case please do contact me, and we will sort the issue out!

Alittle about me!

I've collected records for about 20 years, and now have TONNES! I want to go travelling for as long as I can, and as such don't want to have too many possessions to have to store, I also need dosh to travel as freely as I'd like, and therefore selling the bulk of my collection seems the best of both worlds! I love records and will still keep buying them, I'm sure, but I really need to downsize in a big way! I do have some seriously RARE records to list over the next few months, and will price them to sell, so please do watch this space!

I will of course, if you aren't ENTIRELY happy with your item offer you a full refund upon a quick return of the item, in exactly the same condition I sent it out in, I wont however cover the postage costs- just in order to put off any time-wasters, I hope you understand. I do have here some REAL MEGA-RARITIES, and I understand perhaps your confidence in me might not be complete, as I haven't listed for a while, which is why I offer this offer of full re-embursment. I am very strict with my grading, having been a collector myself for many years, and I try to include as much relavent information as possible on sales, however if you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask, I will gladly resond as soon as I can.

I happily offer reductions of postage costs on multiple-items, 

I try grade using direct sunlight which shows up more than anything (hence where poss I take my photos in direct sunlight too), however living in the Pennine Hills, contrary to popular rumour it isn't sunny here EVERY day! So when this isn't always possible, as a backup I also use a 100 Watt lightbulb, though when poss I try to use both.

I feel my grading system is stricter than many I see used, but the sellers I respect on Ebay and elsewhere seem to be of the same mind as me, I'd much prefer to be known as someone who undergrades and you can get a good record from, than someone you have to wonder, "actually is their VG+ quite what I'd expect from that?". Hope I can win you over!
