BLUE NOTE FEELIN THE SPIRIT 2005 TRIPLE LP SET - Nineteen sixty-two saw St. Louis-born soul-jazz guitar hero Grant Green exploring not only the full range of his instrument, as usual, but the full range of his imagination. Over the course of six sessions as a leader for Blue Note that year, Green tried his hand at spirituals, Latin music, cowboy songs, and, of course, standards, not to mention the odd original tune.
Feelin' the Spirit is an album by jazz guitarist Grant Green originally issued on Blue Note Records as BLP 4132 and BST 84132. Consisting purely of jazz versions of African American spirituals, it is one of a series of theme records recorded by the guitarist in 1962.
From the original liner notes: "Green has made no attempt here to recreate the five spirituals he plays in anything resembling their original context, nor has he tried to duplicate their often pallid manifestation on the concert stage. He has approached them with affection, but as music to be played in his style. The result is a fascinating combination: the techniques of modern jazz, blues, and gospel, all applied to the spiritual." - Joe Goldberg
This album was remastered and reissued in Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Edition series on March 1, 2005.

BLUES FOR TOMORROW 1982 FANTASY RECORDS RELEASE- with this out of print edition unique marketing sticker with information about the artist and personnel involved in this masterpiece. Only available on this limited edition STICKER pressing. At first blush, this seems like it might be the worst sort of cash-in by Riverside Records, gathering a handful of seemingly unrelated tracks leftover from a number of the label's 1957 recording sessions by various artists into a compilation loosely grouped around the broadest possible theme: the blues. But I've had this LP playing in my house almost non-stop for the past days and can attest that this is an astonishingly rich and coherent album. Riverside honcho Orrin Keepnews may have been initially inspired to put this album together by the pressing need to release the title track. It's a leftover from the Monk's Music session, but what a leftover! Anyone familiar with that seminal album (and if you aren't, well, you should be) knows that Art Blakey and Coleman Hawkins were having a particularly fine day, and a young John Coltrane was making his presence felt. The whole thing positively crackles. "Blues for Tomorrow" is the entire cast from that album, jamming on a Gigi Gryce head, after Thelonious has left the building. The lengthy workout features an absolutely incendiary Hawkins solo as well as jaw-dropping work by Blakey and bassist Wilber Ware, carrying rhythm duties sans pianist. Ware takes a truly fine solo and then duets with Blakey, who is tapping out a subtle rhythm on his kit while Ware taps the wooden body of his bass. Very cool. But then Blakey enters a long drum roll and then literally explodes into an amazing solo. This cut had to see the light of day without delay, and Mr Keepnews then does a creditable job of pulling together some other atmospheric takes on the blues. The best of the rest is the cut by Herbie Mann's Californians, with Mann on bass clarinet and the redoubtable Jack Sheldon on trumpet. The most famous jazz bass clarinetist, Eric Dolphy, mined the instrument for its human vocal qualities, but Mann plays it like, well, a clarinet. It's deep and smooth, like brandy. Pianist Jimmy Rowles gives the the soloists lots of space, so the bass clarinet and the bass tend to dominate, giving this piece a beautifully dark palette. Things drop down a notch in quality and interest on what would have been the original LP's second side, with the weakest track being an indifferent piece left off of Sonny Rollin's Sound of Sonny album. Rollins' solo is tentative and Paul Chambers gets one his lengthy Paul Chambers solos. We've heard this before. But the Mundell Lowe guitar blues with pianist Billy Taylor is delightful, and Bobby Jaspar, better known for his flute work, takes things out nicely. Call it "alt-blues", Blues for Tomorrow makes for a very worthy collection.
