Label Conditions: All four in SUPERB conditions: very fresh, clean and attractive with only a couple of three (or less) spindle marks. All evidence suggests this fantastic pair of records have hardly been played, reitterated by fantastic clean sound.

Cat Number: 613008/9 (set number 2657-001).

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 134 / 132 grams. These more typical Track weights, most Polydor pressings that came a little later were usually much thinner and lighter.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Initially issued with blue writing inside the cover, these are very rare and even more so in decent condition. Replaced very quickly with the white writing inside. Finding any Track copy in anything like top conditions is fast becoming difficult as this legendary artist’s popularity and collectability continues to soar. Only available on Track before being repressed on Polydor for a relatively short time and most who bought it played it into submission on often very crude and basic record players. This hugely complex album is so easily damaged by heavy tracking vintage equipment – indeed many subjected to mono record players that tracked at 10 to 15 grams, no small wonder many were showing signs of wear after just a few plays. One arm drop or jolt, and there’s another copy written off with a deep scratch, crator, jump or stick – all the perils faced by records of the era, and remember, this legendary album was not even released in mono – that for many, a surprising fact even for 1968. Also, that beautiful ‘ladies’ cover rarely wears well. Although laminated, this often seen badly dulled, peeled, lifted and creased. Finding a fresh example with few of those visual imperfections is immensely difficult and it really is SO frustrating when a nice one comes along, I cannot even show it on Ebay due to it’s almost paranoid rules on showing nudity. This cover was never banned in the UK so why cannot it be shown? – this will erk all sellers – or at least those who stick to the rules – and many fail to do so still. Anyway, the outside artwork will be described fully further down, and this is one that looks very nice, do not underestimate just how difficult this album is to find that looks hardly played with an attractive cover. Brief Artist & Album Info: The words ‘classic’ and ‘masterpiece’ are two phrases that are often overused, maybe by myself sometimes as I feely admit, but I do not hesitate in using them for this one. An iconic album by the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. Quite surprisingly, it failed top the album charts, peaking at No 6. This was the last proper album with the name Experience following Are You Experienced and Axis Bold As Love. A stunning double set that features some amazing tracks including the long and short versions of ‘Voodoo Chile’, Dylan’s ‘All Along the Watchtower’ and the best for me is the long and quite sublime ‘1983’ which flows into ‘Moon, turn the tides...Gently, gently Away’, gentle and beautiful pieces. This album was so ahead of its time, the recording is magnificent and the cover is as famous as the music, almost certainly one of the most famous sleeves in rock history. This UK version cover was not issued in the US. Such a shame the rules do not allow this impressive cover to be shown in full, but look at the stunning centrefold picture of Hendrix. The inner picture is pure class and must rank as one of the greatest ever pictures in rock history. A simply amazing picture of Jimi in full colour with that green smoky haze rising around him - little sums up this fantastic era in music better than this. As stated above, two hardly played, and very well pressed Track records that play very close to perfection and the cover impressive with any wear or issues light. Although laminated, this does not age well. Creases come easily and with the dark finish they ruin the appearance somewhat as does any major laminate dulling or lifting which few seem to avoid. Overall, this only gives gentle clues to it’s significant age and the both records practically none. So a very fine all-round example that many, if not most collectors will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A fully laminated gatefold format with the famous ‘Ladies’ cover that was not issued in the United States. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day. This includes December 1971 inner sleeves.

Laminate – Front & Back: Again, it is with deep frustration I cannot show this beautiful, classic cover, one of the most famous within the history of rock. Yes, I can understand to some degree, not allowing the Blind Faith ‘girl’ cover, but not allowing this, is pure crazy – so many choose to ignore the rules anyway – but rules are rules – however ridiculous, and I will not (knowingly) break them. The laminate on both sides retains a very fine shine, freshness and clarity. A little rim dulling is so hard to avoid on double sets especially, any traces are very light mainly on the back as seen under angled light. There is no lifting or blistering, all the laminate is well adhered and not many creases. Hardly any away from the sides, most present are light, fine and faint. There is a tip crease on the spine top from a mild, low-impact knock, but generally, all corners are neaty and still quite crisp, that so often not the case. With more critical viewing under angled light, some very fine surface marks are seen, mostly on the back, but this being quite critical of a cover this great age. Considering how dark and revealing these outside surfaces are, very little spoils it’s appearance. So not perfect, and few ever will be being honest. This is always a challenging cover, but this very fine looking example is way above average with many seen tired and very dull, often with major laminate issues which this has generally avoided.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Stunning in all respects with very shiny and fresh laminate, just look at that stunning artwork. The laminate is close to mirror-like and even the foldline hinge has ALL its laminate intact, strong and TOTALLY uncracked. How unusual is that? Hence, when opened, it still has a gentle creak, but this one does fully open without resistance as seen on my pictures. That in some ways good news, as this can be fully opened and enjoyed to the maximum.

Top & Bottom Edges: All superb and fully laminated with no scuffing at all, both ultra smooth to the fingertip. Incredibly, these edges still retain an impressive shine as well. No friction rubs, chips or abrasions to the main surfaces, just small tip rubs. All are straight and meet up neatly together, very close to flush and parallel for good measure.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with few traces of wear and both guaranteed untrimmed. Viewed very critically end-on, slightly thickened with a little gentle burring but totally unsoftened or feathered. Records entered on these edges that are near exceptional compared to most seen. Beware of covers with no unlaminated strips on the ends, these on such covers were always present, here natural and quite wide.

Spine and Text: Solid and thicker than some I have seen, straight with minimal compression, also folded very close to square, so the edges meet up almost perfectly together and very close to parallel. No text was printed on this one but the design flows around and all is perfect and unworn under the solid and mainly unpeeled laminate – a little at the very ends that registers little. A crucial factor as one of the girl’s faces is seen in the centre of the spine, so any rubbing or damage would ruin this artwork. Few will survive with much less wear. This a spine that always forms a natural central crease from opening, so the odd fine laminate split is also hard to avoid. But with a very high percentage of the laminate strongly intact, with just the odd hint of flaking, this delicate area will prove hard to find much better.

Corners: A fairly small crease to the spine top corner and a little tip rubbing to most, in context only light, especially on such a dark cover. Remember, the right corners are NOT laminate protected as the laminate always ends short of full width. So with that in mind, the majority of these corners are in very fine condition with shape to match.

Cover Summary: One of the most famous covers of all time, this does it strong justice – just wish I could show the main outer surfaces to prove the point. A major plus-point is the excellent shine, this has far more positives than negatives and will please many collectors. Poldor ones are far more common but lack the charisma, history and authenticity that only the Track Ernest J. Day covers offer.

The Inner Sleeves: Both EXCELLENT: one just a little toned on one edge. These Polydor-style polylined inners are a mirror-image pair with the slightly later date-codes of 1271 (December 1971). In some ways, good news as these records have without a shadow-of-doubt, avoided any usage on basic mono record players that I am certain many late 1960s copies would have received. Both window circles crisp and neat, the lining fresh and clear. All the edges unsplit with no repairs. All reitterates a slightly later Track pressing which matches up to the labels of this copy. It almost seems in appropriate to show pictures of inner sleeves when I would rather be showing lovely pictures of the front and back main cover that have far more to offer in the wow-factor department.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) and mostly MINT(–): and a VERY impressive visual pair. Ultra clean, fresh with a beautiful shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A pair hardly even played with any surface traces, even under bright angled light, bordering on minuscule. Finding all four sides on any Track copy of this record so clean and hardly used is an immensely difficult task. With sound quality to match the beautiful looks, this is an exceptional pair that look hardly run-in in vinyl terms. These records should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play with superb audio quality. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear. Any surface sound barely even registered, a superb Track pressing with no hidden nasties in pristine clean unworn grooves. The odd trace on any ultra quiet passage nigh-on impossible to avoid – and this album does have several such passages – but little noted here at all. Try finding a much cleaner looking and sounding, available example of this monumental double set. Being a slightly later Track copy, this had a better chance of avoiding the ‘Dansette-era’, and without any doubt, has never been subjected to any heavy tracking or worn stulus abuse that so many were. One of rock’s most prized and cherished classics and heard here to almost maximum advantage. Both channels are clean, unstressed and fully focused. Even those ultra quiet passages on the long version of ‘Voodoo Chile’ and several areas of side C play cleanly with hardly anything unwanted. I am certain these records have barely been played – just a glance at the labels and superb playing surfaces confirm that immediately. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this gem. CD copies I have heard are disappointing in comparison, they simply lack the detail, dynamics and historic feel for this one, and the packaging will never have the impact the proper vinyl album has. This is the real thing, it was produced and directed by Hendrix and it’s how the great man wanted it to sound - don’t mess with perfection. If your collection is missing this album, don’t hesitate, this copy will prove very difficult to find better for looks and sound, unless items have to be as per ‘brand new’ (and how many ever truly will be?), this beautiful Track set merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: A legendary issue, this is a premier league album and artist. A copy that can be played and enjoyed to the absolute maximum - this will last indefintely if played on a modern quality deck and treated with the respect it deserves. Devoid of that dreaded distortion, scratches and groove wear, this will please most-all vinyl lovers, it is unlikely to need upgrading. Again, apologies for not being able to show the excellent cover in it’s full glory – this with only gentle hints of age – but still very nice, many will enjoy this also.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
