THE BEATLES – UNRELEASED HOLLYWOOD BOWL ACETATE
I have worked in the record industry since 1965, when Decca took me on as a teenage plugger. On my first day there I was sent down to the Ready, Steady, Go! studio to make sure The Rolling Stones were behaving themselves. After that I went on tour with The Zombies and worked with The Who, The Move, Tim Hardin, Roy Orbison, Ike & Tina Turner and many, many others, as well as producing several records that now sell for more than my annual salary was back then! One of the benefits of working in the music industry in those days was that you would get given advance copies of lots of exciting records, such as the one I am selling here.
By the mid-1970s I was working for Chrysalis in Los Angeles. When Capitol decided to release a live album by The Beatles, George Martin and Geoff Emerick were asked to come over and select the best material that had been recorded at their concerts at The Hollywood Bowl in August 1964 and August 1965. George was a good friend, and I dropped into the studio while they were at work. I remember George explaining that the only way they could prevent the outdated tape machines from overheating when they transferred the masters was by rigging up a hoover to blow cold air onto them as the tapes played! As I departed George gave me an acetate of the songs they’d decided not to use for the release. To the best of my knowledge these performances remain unreleased.
According to an internet source, ‘a number of songs were not included on the album. Songs from the 1964 show not included are ‘Twist And Shout’, ‘You Can’t Do That’, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘If I Fell’, ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’, and ‘A Hard Day's Night’. Songs from the 1965 show not included on the album are ‘I Feel Fine’, ‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby’, ‘Baby’s In Black’, ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, and ‘I'm Down’. Well, folks, as you can see from the list below, this acetate contains several of the unreleased tracks! There’s plenty of between-song banter from John, Paul & George, and the band’s performances are as raw and powerful as you’d expect.

The acetate comes in a standard white card LP sleeve, with the tracklsiting taped onto the front. A white acetate label is pasted onto the front, giving the timings of each side (14:08 and 13:40 respectively). The rear is blank. It is in excellent condition, with no splits or tears.
DISC
The acetate itself is in lovely shape. I have barely played it, so it offers superb fidelity. Please note that the song listed as ‘Be My Baby’ is in fact ‘Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby’, and not The Ronettes classic.
