Description
I am auctioning off selected items from my personal collection of top-drawer LPs. Here we have trumpeter Dizzy Reece’s ace quintet date, Star Bright, an all-original copy mono of Blue Note 4023, recorded Nov. 19, 1959 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. An all-star crew: Reece; Hank Mobley, tenor saxophone; Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; and Art Taylor, drums. The fellows dig in with relish on several swinging originals, plus I’ll Close My Eyes and one other. Hard not to like this kind of music.
Plus this is a true collector’s item: the LP came from a group of albums once owned by the great trumpeter Donald Byrd, who was for a time an A&R man for Blue Note and had copies of all Blue Notes in his collection, mostly unplayed, as this one was prior to my purchase.
The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played and visually inspected as follows:
Vinyl:
M-: Except for a tiny area on the first track that appears to be a pressing flaw and does have a few modest crackles through the first two solos, the record essentially plays like new, with occasional very quiet crackles that one hears on most pressings from this era. So what you hear is simply the sound of this gorgeous music emitting from your speakers. The vinyl has the sheen of a brand new record, no spindle wear, played 3-4 times.
Jacket:
M-: The jacket is also essentially flawless with no ring wear, or discolorations, just a maybe 1/8” flap tear at top left hand corner. Back has Byrd’s stamp -- Property of Donald Byrd -- making this a jazz relic.
Labels are pristine, with the 47 W. 63rd St. NYC address, deep groove both sides, Plastylite ‘p’ or ‘ear’ in dead wax, along with Rudy Van Gelder’s stamp, RVG.
This is a superb copy of this not-often available album.
(All aspects of cover notation and LP markings are stated as being original by Fred Cohen, in his landmark book on Blue Note original pressings, “Blue Note Records: A Guide to Identifying Original Pressings –Jazz Record Center Books.)
The album is guaranteed to be as depicted above. Return within seven days of arrival for refund less shipping, but if you feel you might not want a copy as depicted, perhaps better not to bid. Thanks.
Payment accepted through Pay Pal, and with personal check, which must clear the bank before LP can be shipped. Please do not send cash.
Shipping is via USPS Priority mail with insurance and delivery confirmation, approximately $12 US.. International shipping price on request, approx. $25-50 US.
Thanks for bidding, good luck, and best wishes for good days.
