Description
Here’s another in-demand early Blue Note LP: Hank Mobley With Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan, Blue Note 1540, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder on Nov. 25, 1956. This is a record for lovers of the hard swing of modern jazz, captured beautifully by Van Gelder. A really outstanding session sonically. A great band on hand: Hank on tenor (all his tunes as well), Lee and Byrd, trumpets; the young and vibrant Horace Silver, piano; Paul Chambers (bass), and Charlie Persip (drums). The renditions include roaring-Double Whammy and the easy-swinging Barrel of Funk.
This is a can’t-miss/doesn’t-miss session that fully captures the warmth and swagger of mid-to-late 50s swinging, modern jazz.
This would seem to be a first pressing of this ace LP, although not a first release; likely a second. It has the essential elements of a 1st: a flat rim, deep groove, Plastylite P in dead wax, RVG initials etched by hand, but the label is 47 West 63rd., not 767 Lexington. The cover, however, is a first edition, with the Lexington address, blank spine and non-laminated front cover. Unless you are looking for absolute 1st edition, this is an LP for you.
The record has been cleaned on a VPI Record cleaner and is graded after being played and visually inspected as follows:
Vinyl:
M-. This record has been played only a few times and there is no major noise on either side, just a few here-and-there quiet ticks one hardly notices. Like new. Looks that way, too, with a bright sheen and no scratches.
Jacket:
VG++: Front and back have a bit of ring and shelf wear, but nothing major. Looks pretty good. The top and left spines are scuffed, though not split, and on the top right rear a name has been stamped in small type.
Labels: Both sides have labels that are bright and clean without marks. As noted above, the address is 47 West 63rd, NYC, there is a Plastylite ‘p’ or ‘ear’ in dead wax, a deep groove, and Rudy Van Gelder’s etched intitals.
Inner sleeve: Not a Blue Note. Plain white.
(All aspects of cover notation and LP markings are stated as being original by Fred Cohen, in his landmark book on Blue Note original pressings, “Blue Note Records: A Guide to Identifying Original Pressings” –Jazz Record Center Books.)
The album is guaranteed to be as depicted above. Return within seven days of arrival for refund less shipping, but if you feel you might not want a copy as depicted, perhaps better not to bid. Thanks.
Payment accepted through Pay Pal, and with personal check, which must clear the bank before LP can be shipped. Please do not send cash.
Shipping is via USPS Priority mail with insurance and delivery confirmation, approximately $12 US.. International shipping price on request, approx. $25 US.
Thanks for bidding, good luck, and best wishes for good days.
