Condition:
DISC: Vinyl has been played a relatively small number of times but was not handled with the best of care. Both sides are for the most part very clean - however, each side has a couple medium scuff marks which are described in greater detail below.
Each side contains two tracks. My play-grade observations are as follows:
Side 1:
1-1 "The Way You Look Tonight" runs approximately 9 minutes 35 seconds. It plays cleanly except for approximately 50 seconds from 0:39 to 1:30 where a small scratch produces a series of recurring ticks that I found to be distracting. I have included a sound clip of the first 2 minutes of the track so you can judge for yourself. I also noted 4 isolated single ticks at various places during the remainder of the track that were clearly audible. Otherwise the track is very enjoyable with nice clean fidelity. Because of the recurring ticks in the early going, I would grade this track VG-.
1-2 "Ball Bearing" plays nice VG++ with nice clean sound and no distractions.
2-1 "All The Things You Are" which runs a total of 10:21, has a heavy scuff across the latter portion of the track, which produces a similar period of approximately 55 seconds (from approximately 7:25 to 8:15, with a series of audible ticks that I found to be distracting. I also noted 3 isolated single ticks at various places during the earlier portions of the track. Beyond 8:15 when the ticks cease, the remainder of the track plays cleanly throughout the remainder of the side. I would also grade this track at VG- due to the recurring ticks over a 55-second period.
2-2 "Smoke Stack" plays nice VG++ with nice clean sound and no distractions.
JACKET: Jacket is VG+, overall quite presentable, with some noticeable flaws. Laminated front panel is clean, except for some chipping of laminate along the opening edge near the bottom, and a couple light vertical scratch marks near the bottom center (hardly noticeable). There are also a few small chips along seams and spine, and splits are just starting to appear at the top and bottom opening edge, approximately one inch each. Wear is showing at the corner tips.
Reverse panel shows some darkening along the borders due to storage and there is some light surface wear across the panel. Otherwise clean with no writing or stickers.
Track Listing:
Side One:
- The Way You Look Tonight
- Ball Bearing
Side Two:
- All the Things You Are
- Smoke Stack
Review:
“A Blowin’ Session is one of the greatest hard bop jam sessions ever recorded; it is filled with infectious passion and camaraderie. It's also the only time tenor saxophonists Johnny Griffin and John Coltrane would play together on record. Initially Coltrane wasn't scheduled to be on this date, but Griffin saw him on his way to Rudy Van Gelder's studio and asked him to join the remaining musicians, third tenor Hank Mobley, trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Blakey. These musicians were all associates within the same East Coast hard bop scene of the time; they came from the Jazz Messengers and Miles Davis' quintet, and many had played with Dizzy Gillespie's big band. Showcased on this April 8, 1957, session are two standards, "The Way You Look Tonight" and "All the Things You Are," along with two original Griffin compositions, "Ball Bearing" and "Smoke Stack." Of special note is "The Way You Look Tonight," featuring the three tenors trading off with complexity and speed that is still astonishing, especially in the case of Griffin (dubbed the world's fastest saxophonist) and Coltrane's ability to navigate complex chord changes over a fast tempo.”
