Beatles Acetate 1963 Emidisc 12" She Loves You 33rpm

She Loves You / I'll Get You.  Highly unusual 12" single sided metal Emidisc Acetate, recorded at 33RPM. in 1963.

Note: A smaller 10" 45rpm copy of this A & B side combination sold at a major London Music memorabilia auction in 2008 for significantly more than my starting price, hence my high starting price, but no reserve auction.

One Acetate web site, states that Reference acetates were often recorded at a different speed and on a different size disc to the eventual release. I am not stating this IS a reference Acetate, but some of the criteria are fulfilled....... only you knowledgeable Beatles fans will know if it is or not!!!! 

Remember that this single was not released on any regular album until later compilations, so this is possibly extra rare therefore as a 33rpm disc.  Track is assumed mono of course as the first couple of released singles I believe were not stereo, (since albums were optional stereo, that may explain why its not included on an album(???)

Here is an ultra scarce original 1963 Emidisc Acetate of the Beatles 3rd No. 1 single, and the one that became their biggest selling No. 1 in the UK , and ultimately went No.1 in many other countries. In 2004, this song was ranked 64th, All time Great song by Rolling Stone.

Here is a sound sample of approx 1 minute from each of the two singles, on this single sided acetate, with a few seconds gap between to select each section on the disc. The opening minute, of the eventual A side . followed by the first section of B side , then just the last 20seconds or so of same second track.

Samples auto started as you opened the page, so TURN UP your volume and read on while you read about this clean sounding disc (for an acetate) that has been FULLY TEST PLAYED!!!

Disc came to me in a complete record collection containing many other NON Beatles test pressings , belonging to the now deceased Sound Engineer Kevin Daly. His work history has him starting at Decca Studios in West Hampstead as an 18 yr old Progress Chaser (records) from November 1960, then more importantly as a Recording Engineer from 6th June 1961. 

That is an important connection, as the Beatles Decca Demos, were recorded at West Hampstead on January 1 1962, so it is conceivable he had some contact with the engineer overseeing those recording sessions (or producer Tony Meehan or A & R Mike Smith).  THIS IS NOT AN ACETATE FROM THE DECCA AUDITIONS.

AS we know Acetates as potential mixes, were often handed round to other sound engineers for their opinions, and it is assumed that as an engineer, he was passed this copy to assess later in 1963 when the recording was made at Parlorphone (EMI).  Kevin Daly later went on to work for Argo (decca subsidiary), was  a pivotal link in the formation of the ASV label, did some contract work on EMI recordings, and moved to Australia in 1982, working on Australian pressings with EMI and the ABC before returning to the UK in 1989, and tragically dying later that year at the age of  47.  This disc was purchased from his wife about 3 years ago, in Australia, among the complete collection of personal records and test pressings (NO Beatles) that was still with her at that time, In all the boxes I assumed this was just another of the 78's that Kevin eventually specialised in remastering to LP with ASV label.  A closer inspection quite some time after purchase, revealed its Beatles Acetate status.

VARIATION TO RELEASE VERSIONS

Initially my untrained Beatle ear could detect no difference, to A side 'She Loves You', but some youtube versions pertaining to be the original Slow version play for about 5 seconds longer.  From first note to last, this acetate version of She Loves You, plays for 2 minutes 14 seconds. Curiously the B track plays in perfect timing to the only copy I have to compare to, that is on the Rarities disc which was included in the 1980's box collection.  If the time difference of 5 seconds was just due to my turntable speed error, the second track should have been 5 seconds quicker as well, and its not. There MAY be other differences, but I cannot detect any.

Interestingly the label on this was typed with the B side as being called "Oh Yeah" but ruled out and written in blue pen the eventual title "I'll Get You"

REPLAY condition Tested with only 1gm headshell weight, (I know Acetates wear quickly)

Generally for being stored in a paper only cover, there is very little visible scratching to the surface, the two photographed scratches, only supply a very minor replay tic that is repetetive.

The first test play at 1 gm headshell and 1.5gm antiskate made the stylus stick inbetween track A and track B.  I discovered that antiskate setting of 4 gms, made it play thru to track 2, but the continued 4gm anti skate setting in track 2, made it skip one revolution near the end. Playing both tracks individually at 1.5 gm antiskate produces no needle skips.

Cover Condition original brown paper dust cover has considerable wear damage and  is completely seam split top and bottom, spline is only just hanging in there.  (See Photo's)

That's why it is now protected by an ARCHIVE quality non scratching cover as supplied by MFSL for their audiophile recordings.

Acetate condition  two small scratches that produce light tics in opening track 1 and close of track 2 Fully test played , (see photo's, match sticks point to scratches)
