According to Record Mart owner and Montuno label boss Jesse Moskowitz, “The big hit on [the Yambú album came] after we made the LP, when we did the disco DJ 12-inch version of the old jazz standard ‘Sunny’ with an instrumental funk tune ‘Hippopotamus’ on the B-side.” The year was 1975, and the fledgling disco DJ culture was on the rise. Moskowitz continues: “The band’s piano player and musical director at the time, Milton Hamilton, arranged that. His girlfriend and another girl [Lisette Wilson and Caty Sevilla] were there in the studio with him, and they said to him, “Let’s record a version of ‘Sunny’!” – just like that! So as a favor to Milton, the band let them do it and put it on the record. That song really had nothing to do with the original concept of the album. Of course, ironically, that was the one track that really took off!” The 45 7-inch single was one of the first to hit David Mancuso’s legendary New York Record Pool, and the 12” version was one of the first of its kind; the rest is history. Now Subway Salsacompilation producer Pablo Yglesias and Vampisoul Records have teamed up with The Whiskey Barons to bring you a limited edition “rework” of this iconic Latin Hustle single, replicating the original, B-side and all, but with a twist. History remixed and re-imagined! Digital download of originals and reworks is available.
