Original private pressing from this Alaska LP

recorded in 1974

Exceptional acid folk LP, from Alaska released privately in 1974.Melancholic mood, alternating male/female vocals, almost hypnotic psychedelia al through

Windflower were a Ba’Hai, multi-ethnic, psych folk ensemble that formed in Alaska in 1972 and consisted of Gary Lamar (acoustic guitar-12 string guitar-bass-mandolin-vocals), Gavin Reed (acoustic guitar-bass-mandolin-vocals), David John Rychetnik (acoustic guitar-bass-flute-reed flute-assorted percussion-vocals), Victor Wong (piano-electric piano-organ-mellotron-vibes-bass-vocals), Marshall Murphy (vocals-percussion), Kitty Wong (vocals-percussion), and Zonnetah Varley (vocals-percussion). All members belonged to the Baha’i Faith and many of the gigs the group played were associated with Baha’i community events.

The music on this is gorgeous psych folk, with beautiful female and male vocals, trippy instrumentation including mellotron and various unusual stringed instruments, and a general devotional religious vibe. This “self titled” lp was recorded at Studio 70 in Munich, Germany in 1973 during a European tour (also associated primarily with Baha’i events at the time) which included performances in Germany, England, Austria, Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Israel, Norway and Finland. The album was privately pressed and released in early 1974.

Instrumentations are guitars, vocals, flute, assorted percussion, mellotron, female vocals and more. This band has Baha’i Church connections and has a few Eskimo members. Featured in Han’s Pokora’s Record Collector Dreams and reviewed in the great Acid Archives. Here’s what the Archives had to say about it, “This is somewhere between genuine acid folk and cringeworthy up-with-people commune folk. Over the full album the sweet, passionless, vocal style (some female) really starts to grate. A song or two at a time, though, this can be pretty appealing, and there are a few haunting tunes here. Not really recommended, but if you can get past the singing style you will probably like it”.

Prior to returning to Alaska and retiring from professional music, the group also performed at various venues in Oklahoma, Hawaii. Band members including Gary Lamar, Marshall Murphy, and Gavin Reed, along with vocalist Barbara Taylor, performed casual gigs for a number of years, based out of Anchorage, Alaska, while they were all resident there, until the mid-1990’s.
