Description
Collectors, here is an amazing disc, Victor Blue label #55225. George Gershwin plays his Rhapsody in Blue on the piano, with Paul Whiteman's Concert Orchestra. This was recorded on June 10, 1924, and released in September 1924. Ther record plays well with fairly limited surface noise.
Gershwin introduced the Rhapsody at the (now legendary) concert of "modern" music in Aeolian Hall in February 1924. At that time, he was a fairly unknown 24 year old, having written only the song "Swanee", and a few short running Broadway musicals with his brother Ira and other lyricists. This was his first big musical triumph! So, this record came out about six months after the introduction. The rhapsody has been shortened quite a bit to fit on one 12 inch 78, but still very enjoyable. Very tough record to find, the black seal Orthophonic record Gershwin made of the rhapsody in 1927 was a much bigger seller! Another copy of this record sold on eBay for $122 on February 27, 2023. If this is what you like, don't pass it up!
