PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. SCARCE and sought after....Original 1972 first pressing, issued only overseas (Europe), a recommended collectible for all hard rock fans including early THIN LIZZY followers being as our heros here, FUNKY JUNCTION, are actually THIN LIZZY in disguise....
A hard & hairy rocked out affair, Thin Lizzy take on Deep Purple at their own game... Funky Junction the Irish rock band actually known as THIN LIZZY were brought together in 1972 specifically to record this album of songs made famous by British band Deep Purple. The project was brought about by a German businessman named Leo Muller, who contacted Thin Lizzy to record this album. The group were not enthusiastic, as they were trying to forge their own style and identity, but they needed the money. Thin Lizzy's vocalist, Phil Lynott, decided that he was unable to sing like Deep Purple vocalist Ian Gillan, so restricted himself to playing bass guitar and singing back-up. The band brought in Benny White, singer with the Dublin group Elmer Fudd, because they generally performed Deep Purple covers during gigs. Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey referred to White as "really an Ian Gillan clone". Thin Lizzy did not have a keyboard player in their lineup, so Elmer Fudd's keyboardist Dave "Mojo" Lennox, later in Blodwyn Pig, was also asked to participate. Thin Lizzy guitarist Eric Bell stated that White and Lennox were each paid "around £60" to travel to De Lane Lea Studios in London to record the album. The makeshift band rehearsed for "two or three hours", according to Thin Lizzy member Brian Downey, before recording the whole album in one day. Nine tracks were recorded, with five being Deep Purple covers. Three others were loosely improvised instrumentals; "Dan" – a version of "Londonderry Air" or "Danny Boy" by Bell in a Jimi Hendrix style; "Rising Sun" – a cover of "The House of the Rising Sun" made popular by The Animals; and the original composition "Palamatoon". The last track on the album was "Corina", credited to Leo Muller, as were the other non-Deep Purple songs.
The album was released in the UK and the USA on the Stereo Gold Award label, and on the Sonic Records label in Germany. For the German release, the band's name was changed to "The Rock Machine" with the album title being changed to "The Rock Machine Play the Best of Deep Purple".
Thin Lizzy were paid £1000 for the recording but their name was entirely omitted from the album, and a photo of a different band was featured on the cover, namely, the legendary heavies, Hard Stuff, who were signed to Deep Purple's own label. Fireball is intense, all molten riffs and choppy guitars, while Black Night is faithful to the original with some groovy bass. A swampy version of Strange Kinda Woman concludes the first side.
A mean version of Hush is a highlight complete with cheesy singalong chorus. A blisteringly good Speed King completes the quintet of Purple numbers.
Elsewhere you gotta look out for two Muller originals - the bluesy Corina and the stunning psych meets prog instrumental Palamatoon. The spirit of Hendrix is alive and well in Dan (loosely based on Danny Boy) while an overwrought House Of The Rising Sun is, while still good, probably the least memorable track here.
