Performer Notes: Rhino's 2016 box set The Atlantic Years - In Mono offers vinyl repressings of the seven original studio albums Ray Charles released at Atlantic: Ray Charles (1957), The Great Ray Charles (1957), Yes Indeed! (1958), The Genius of Ray Charles (1959), What'd I Say (1959), The Genius After Hours (1961), and The Genius Sings the Blues (1961). Missing from this set are his two duet albums with Milt Jackson and the live Ray Charles at Newport, great records whose absence isn't necessarily noted because the seven LPs here are all excellent (that said, it does feel odd that the 1954 hit "It Should've Been Me" slipped through the cracks due to the insistence that this features only the long-players). Better still, the remastering of the mono by John Webber contains real punch, clarity, and grit, so this is a fine way to listen to some of the best music of the 20th century. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
