· THE WHO - WHO SELL OUT – ORIGINAL 1967 DECCA RECORDS STEREO LP DL-74950
· ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING
· *** INSANELY RARE WHITE LABEL PROMO ***
· ULTRA-RARE PROMO-ONLY VERSION OF THE ALBUM WHERE:
· (A) “COMMERCIALS” APPEAR ALL ON ONE SIDE (SIDE 1)
· (B) THE SONGS ARE DIFFERENTLY SEQUENCED (FOR EXAMPLE, “OUR LOVE WAS, IS” FOLLOWS – NOT PRECEDES – “I CAN SEE FOR MILES”; “TATOO” IS AT THE END OF SIDE 1, NOT IN THE MIDDLE.
· (C) AT LEAST ONE SONG IS DIFFERENTLY TITLED THAN ON THE RELEASED VERSION (“MEDAC” BECOMES “SPOTTED HENRY”)
· (D) THE “COMMERCIALS” ARE SPECIFICALLY LISTED BY TITLE AND DURATION ON THE LABEL; IN OTHER WORD, THEY ARE TREATED AS TRACKS (THEY ARE ALSO SEPARATED, OR “SPIRALED” ON THE RECORD
· (E) THE RECORD HAS DIFFERENT (AND VERY UNUSUAL) SIX-DIGIT CATALOG NUMBER THAN THE COMMON, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED VERSION (THIS RARE PROMO-ONLY COPY BEARS CATALOG NUMBER DL-734505, NOT A COMMON, COMMERCIALLY RELEASED CATALOG NUMBER DL-74950 (THE COVER, HOWEVERM IS A DL-74950, SINCE NO COVERS WITH CATALOG NUMBER DL-734505 WERE EVER MADE)
· (F) SOME SONG TIMINGS ON THE PROMO LABEL APPEAR TO BE OFF BY A FEW SECONDS COMPARED TO THE LABEL ON THE STOCK (RELEASED) VERSION, BUT WE DON’T BELIEVE THIS SIGNIFIES ANY DIFFERENCE IN RECORDING OR MIXING (THIS MAY BE A RESULT OF FACTORING COMMERICALS INTO THE TRACK LENGTH OR MERGING TWO TRACKS INTO ONE)
· BASED ON A DIFFERENT CATALOG NUMBER, WE COMFORTABLY AND WITHOUT ANY RESERVATIONS CLAIM THAT THIS WAS NOT A “TRUE” PROMO VERSION OF THE ALBUM, BUT, IN FACT, THE UNRELEASED “FIRST DRAFT” OF THE ALBUM WHICH WAS ABANDONED IN FAVOR OF THE SECOND, BETTER KNOWN AND COMMERCIALLY RELEASED, FINAL (SECOND) VERSION.
· NO COVERS WERE EVER PRODUCED FOR DECCA DL-734505. ALL DL-734505 RECORDS WERE PACKAGED IN REGULAR DL-74950 COVERS. SHOULD A PROPER DL-734505 COVER EVER BE FOUND, THE OWNER WILL DEFINITELY HAVE A $10,000 ITEM ON HIS HANDS.
· ORIGINAL DECCA LABEL, WHITE PROMO VERSION
· THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· THICK CARDBOARD COVER, AMERICAN STYLE
· COVER HAS A NIFTY STICKER STILL AFFIXED TO FRONT PANEL
· CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS
· THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING
· MATRIX NUMBER IN TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) ENDS WITH '-1/-2'. ON SOME LABELS, SUFFIX '–1' DENOTES THE VERY FIRST, ORIGINAL PRESSING)
· MACHINE-STAMPED MATRIX NUMBER IN TRAIL-OFF VINYL (DEAD WAX) OF THE RECORD
· This version of the album (with commercials separated from the songs) has NEVER been available on legitimate Compact Disc or in any other way, manner or format; although the remastered MCA/Universal compact disc attempts something similar.

Pete Townshend originally planned The Who Sell Out as a concept album of sorts that would simultaneously mock and pay tribute to pirate radio stations, complete with fake jingles and commercials linking the tracks. For reasons that remain somewhat ill defined, the concept wasn't quite driven to completion, breaking down around the middle of side two (on the original vinyl configuration). Nonetheless, on strictly musical merits, it's a terrific set of songs that ultimately stands as one of the group's greatest achievements. "I Can See for Miles" (a Top Ten hit) is the Who at their most thunderous; tinges of psychedelia add a rush to "Armenia City in the Sky" and "Relax"; "I Can't Reach You" finds Townshend beginning to stretch himself into quasi-spiritual territory; and "Tattoo" and the acoustic "Sunrise" show introspective, vulnerable sides to the singer/songwriter that had previously been hidden. "Rael" was another mini-opera, with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy. The album is as perfect a balance between melodic mod pop and powerful instrumentation as the Who (or any other group) would achieve; psychedelic pop was never as jubilant, not to say funny (the fake commercials and jingles interspersed between the songs are a hoot).
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY RICHIE UNTERBERGER, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye , Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565.
THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) White Promo Label version of this title with all commercials on one side, is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber these white label promo copies by a ratio of at least 1,000:1.
(d) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(e) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams
- Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- A faint water stain affects the area about 1 inch wide along the bottom seam; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams
- Cover shows some yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
