Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a tiny few (3 or 4) light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Along with two superbly clean playing surfaces, a very impressive vintage mono record that appears hardly played

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 154 grams. A very substantial, and not untypical weight for this era.

Rarity: Very scarce: even more so in this very lightly played condition. We all know the state so many 1960s mono records are seen in.

Brief Info: ‘Get the Picture?’ was the second Pretty Things album, issued in the same year as the debut. Whilst the debut was pure RnB, this now slowly progressed to a more soulful album as well as exploring freakbeat sounds with fuzz and distorted guitar sounds. The first song even includes a credit by Jimmy Page way prior to any thoughts of Led Zeppelin. Again, this is an elusive album, especially in such clean and clearly little played condition. Indeed many consider this the rarest Pretty Things album and dating way back to 1965, so many being written-off or ruined by heavy tracking, very basic mono record players of the time. When examples like this hit the market, they are thing of rarity and immense beauty.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (the front being at least EXCELLENT(++). A single format with front laminate, this covers all the folded edges. The back has the early paste-on rear unprotected panel. Printed and made in England, uncredited.

Lamination & Front: For a cover fast approaching 50-years-old, this is in impressive condition. The front is immaculate and truly does come close to reminding of as-made. With laminate retaining fantastic shine, freshness and clarity, it has no lifting, peeling and minimal traces of any dulling, even under light. Also no creasing worthy of mention, the colour of the graphic is intense and retains genuine beauty.

Cover Back: The unprotected non-flipback back is clearly prone to all forms of wear. This has little, but has gently darkened with age. Again, no creasing and the main paste-on panel is unlifted, a little mild grubbiness beyond difficult to avoid totally. Considering the weight of the record inside all these years, there is hardly any rim impression either.

Top Edge: Reasonably straight with no wear, still very smooth and unscuffed.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp being made with thicker than usual card, this has barely any wear. Any thickening minimal, even seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, reasonably straight, a trace of natural bowing as laminate tries to contract over time (this arguably better than lifting). Minimal compression with all text perfect and unworn under the solid, uncracked and very smooth, unscuffed laminate.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the right pair, but little else. Very fine to excellent (or better) shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this rare mid-1960s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. You could wait a long, long time to find the front especially like this again. Fontana covers from this period were more ‘basic’ than others, and they do not tend to wear well. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and remaining unsplit from the massively pressed record. A plain white, polylined example with two undamaged crisp window circles and the lining still very clear. Lightish corner creasing only. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text (in black ink).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with superb shine and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and mainly faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A mono classic that has more than survived those perilous times, this has had no accidents. Remember, just one jolt or arm drop from a vintage mono record player usually meant another ruined record – we have all seen such types. Deep penetrating scratches, grubby, fingermark laden and dulled playing surfaces. All many consider normal. No such issues with this one, and I would never offer any records in that type of condition full stop. Visually a superb record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare vintage album plays up to, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. This also on a VERY revealing stereo system, including a Linn LP12 Sondek, for which such records were not really designed. But when this clean, these old mono records are things of immense beauty, offering that warmth and depth of sound and great detail. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Any traces bordering on minuscule and few copies will match or outperform this ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, indeed this being my very first example ever. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
