Gilbert John Mellé - Mini Biography
 A recording artist, song writer, jazz musician and composer, Gil Melle launched his career in the sixties. He first displayed his talent for art work and was also a regular jazz performer in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. After relocating to Los Angeles in 1969, Gil Melle displayed his musical talent for NBC's series "Night Gallery" and then composed scores for four of the "Columbo Mystery Films" for ABC and later did the chilling score for television's "Kolchak: The Night Stalker".

He also worked with major filmmakers including a young Steven Spielberg, for whom Melle scored his first two films "The Psychiatrist" and "Savage". With Larry Cohen, he composed a thundering score for "Bone" and next did the Sidney Poitier suspense thriller "The Organization" and ABC's motion picture "The Six Million Dollar Man". He composed the original electronic synthesizer soundtrack for Andromeda Strain (1971)

After leaving television, Melle displayed his talents again for such major motion pictures including "The Manipulator", Warner Brothers' "The Ultimate Warrior" and Melle's best known score for Universal Pictures, the 1976 thriller "The Sentinel". Upon returning to television in the early eighties, he did NBC's "The Intruder Within" and later "The Case of the Hillside Stranglers", where Melle used lower-register instruments to create a chilling score.

Other films for the eighties include "Blood Beach", "The Last Chase" and "Hot Target". Melle's work has been recorded by The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The New Zeland Symphony Orchestra, The Los Angeles Symphony and The National Philharmonic Orchestra of London. In all, he composed music for a remarkable 125 motion pictures.

He was also very active in the arts of painting and sculpting.

He was one of the first film composers to use synthesizers in a major orchestra.

Hexagonal Music:
How I Manufactured The Andromeda Strain Soundtrack LP

In 1970, during the editing of his now classic movie The Andromeda Strain, the director, Robert Wise, approached me with a view to have the soundtrack album marketed in a special manner. I was then in charge of Order Service for MCA Records; that is, record maker. He asked if it was possible to have the record pressed in a hexagonal shape as the extra terrestrial viral strain called Andromeda in the film was hexagonal. I said anything was possible, but that it would cost an estimated $20,000. While this was then a high figure for record production, it was minimal to the movie business and was agreed.

The executives at Kapp Records were only too happy to go along with the scheme as it relieved them of the production costs. I discussed the matter with the president of Monarch Records, who pressed all MCA record at that time. My idea was to have the music recorded in 10" format but put on a 12" matrix and a steel hexagonal mold would then be made and this would be used in a press to trim the excess material to make a hexagonal shape.

Kapp had agreed to a production run of 10,000 records. The original records sold out fairly rapidly. Gil Melle, the composer of the music, urged a second pressing, but the Kapp management did not want to go to the expense of reproducing the original format. It was therefore decided to repress the 10" recording on a 12" standard record and package it in a standard jacket. This did not sell so well, and MCA soon lost interest in the record.

MT9 = MINT: Vinyl has no noticeable imperfections. Vinyl gloss is full. No label wear should be evident. Label has no major imperfections. Label should display full, original color, but may have a spindle mark or two.

NM8 = NEAR MINT (NM 8 or "M-"): Vinyl has a few minor imperfections. Vinyl gloss nearly full. Label wear, if any, should be barely detectable. May have a few minor label imperfections. Label should display full, original color, although it may be somewhat subdued. Record should play without surface noise.

EX7 = EXCELLENT (EX 7 or "VG++"): Vinyl has a few noticeable imperfections. Vinyl should display some gloss. May have slight label wear. May display some label imperfections, but nothing major. May exhibit slight fading of label color. Record may play with some very slight surface noise, but nothing too distracting.

EX6 = VERY GOOD to EXCELLENT (VG-EX 6 or "VG+"): Vinyl has noticeable, but not major, imperfections. May display some original gloss. Label can show some wear, but cannot have large areas of wear. Can have some noticeable label imperfections. Record may play with some slight ticks, pops and surface noise, but nothing that dramatically impedes the sound.

VG5 = VERY GOOD (VG or VG5) Vinyl has several moderate and/or one or two major flaws. Vinyl gloss may not be evident. Label may show wear. Label has several moderate and/or one or two major imperfections, such as writing, tears, stains, etc. Record play with some ticks, pops and surface noise, but nothing that overwhelms the sound. Label may be somewhat faded or discolored.

Look at the photos and check the audio clips. Although time consuming, this provides you and I with the best mutual understanding of what I am selling with the most accurate grading representation. I remove the disc from the jacket and place both into a Plastic / Mylar sleeve
I sandwich this packed sleeve between two thick cardboard flats and tape all four sides tight
I place this ensemble into a water-resistant white bubble wrap envelope and seal it shut
Better corner protection, more impact resistance and superior to simple cardboard mailers

Here’s the deal: I sell records and I want happy, satisfied, repeat customers. I do my best to describe and/or demonstrate the condition accurately. Many of the records I sell are graded VISUALLY only. I couldn’t possible live long enough to play each and every record before I list it for sale. I play selections from some of the records and attach a player for your familiarization and quality assessment.

I know there are a lot of new, first time record buyers out there who have very high expectations. If all you know is CD sound you’ve never heard ticks and pops while listening. Here are some of the many reasons you’re not happy with sonic quality when you buy records.

1. DIRTY RECORD: Records need to start off clean and be cleaned again before each play. Dust, dirt grime, vinyl fragments and other assorted gunk left in a groove on a record will be push in and ground into the sensitive grove, possibly destroying it forever. When records are played microscopic pieces of vinyl come loose and need to be removed before each play.

2. STATIC ELECTRICITY: Records get charged up when they’re moved. Whether shipping it across the country or pulling it off the shelf from your collection, static happens. Some of these random ticks and pops can be very disturbing.

3. WORN STYLUS (Needle) These diamond and emerald stylus’ are extremely small and they do wear out. How many hours you say? Hundreds if you’re careful, never drop it on a record, always play clean records and never play dirty damaged records. You can kill a stylus in a few seconds if you play a damaged, severely worn record. Actually the word needle goes back to the days of 78RPM records and Gramophones. It was not uncommon to replace these needles every play. Remember that a record groove is like the letter V – It is the job of the stylus to fit into the groove and react to all the vibrations that are pressed into the vinyl. A worn stylus can not read the entire groove, just the part it’s worn out fragment can get to.

4. TRACKING ERROR: The stylus is attached to the phono cartridge, which is attached to the heard of the tone arm, which is attached to the base of the turntable. Alignment is critical. Just like aligning the tires on a car. The tracking weight (too little and the stylus jumps all over the record, too much and you smash the stylus, bending it into irreparable damage. If the tone-arm anti-skating adjustment is incorrect, it will add slight lateral pressure to the tonearm, pushing it in our pulling it in or out from the center of the record. It is important to have this adjusted properly or you will experience your stereo signal out of balance or worse, skipping.

5. DIRTY STYLUS: As records are played the stylus collects junk from the grooves. A small fur-ball of oil, grease, smoke particles and dust accumulate on the end of the stylus and makes it impossible for the equipment to play the groove properly. People flick this stuff off with their finger, plow it off or wait for it to fall off. A stylus cleaning brush with proper fluid is the only right way to do this. It’s rarely necessary when only clean records are played.

6. BAD CLEANING TECHNIQUES: If you want to destroy a record rub it hard with a dry record cleaning brush or cloth. You may as well take sandpaper to it. The result is the same.

7. WHY MINT LOOKING RECORDS PLAY POORLY: Aside from static buildup and manufacturers defects there are a couple of common reasons: The actual tapes of the music sounds like crap and that’s the way it was pressed to the vinyl. Rare records and live bootlegs are frequently pressed this way; no other options.  Otherwise it’s probably one careful play with a severely bent or worn stylus. While the record is playing the bad stylus is actually cutting noise into the record grooves with no repair possible. Hence, a Mint- records that plays like garbage.

SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Visual grading can be misleading but you’ll have a hard time finding any dealer who can play grade everything he sells, especially $2 and $3 discs.
