SAMURAI, ‘SELF TITLED’ A 1971 UK FIRST ISSUE GREENWICH GRAMOPHONE COMPANY RECORD LABEL LP – CATALOGUE NUMBER, GSLP 1003.

Samurai was a British band that was formed in 1971, and in 1972 was already defunct. The band formed from the remains of Web. The name Web led to all sorts of misunderstandings, it was billed as The Web of Webb. When their lead singer Tony Dangerfield wanted to stop it, the rest of the band continued under the name Samurai, named after the Japanese warriors. The only album that was nameless, is obscure and little is sold. The subsequent tour was not a success because the horn, probably due to lack of money, could not play while they have an important role on the album. The album and band are forgotten. Album and band, however, are (relative) importance in the history of music, because it proved the precursor of the band Greenslade from the vision of Lawson. Main man of Samurai was Dave Lawson the keyboard, he also supplied all the compositions, which are a cross between progressive rock and jazz-rock . The sound sometimes a bit like the early Soft Machine , but is more on the rock side. The album was released by the record label Greenwich Gramophone Co, a sub-label of Decca. The A & R manager of the label GGC was Tony Reeves, also bass. This again was a friend of Dave Greenslade (see Colosseum ).Greenslade, Lawson, Reeves and Andy McCullough later formed Greenslade.

This LP is on the very rare (GGC) Greenwich Gramophone Picture Record Labels with Made in England label text.

Both record labels are in undamaged beautiful Mint Minus condition, super clean record labels with unfaded text, and just signs of a couple of plays to each label.
