The musical duo Perrey and Kingsley (Jean-Jacques Perrey, b. 1929 and Gershon Kingsley, b. 1922) are pioneers in the field of electronic music. Before their collaboration, starting in 1965, electronic music was considered to be purely avant-garde. They were among the first to create enjoyable electronic music for the general public.

Perrey was born in France in 1929. He was studying medicine in Paris when he met George Jenny, inventor of the Ondioline. Quitting medical school, Perrey travelled through Europe demonstrating this keyboard ancestor of the modern synthesizer. At the age of 30, Perrey relocated to New York, sponsored by Caroll Bratman, who built him an experimental laboratory and recording studio. Here he invented "a new process for generating rhythms with sequences and loops", utilising the environmental sounds of "musique concrète." With scissors, splicing tape, and tape recorders, he spent weeks piecing together a uniquely comique take on the future. Befriending Robert Moog, he became one of the first Moog synth musicians, creating "far out electronic entertainment". In 1965 Perrey met Gershon Kingsley, a former colleague of John Cage. Together, using Ondioline and Perrey's loops, they created two albums for Vanguard — The In Sound From Way Out (1966) and Kaleidoscopic Vibrations (1967). Perrey and Kingsley collaborated on sound design for radio and television advertising. Perrey returned to France, composing for television, scoring for ballet and continuing medical research into therapeutic sounds for insomniacs.

Electronic music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey's 1970 album has dated rather hilariously, but therein lies its not inconsiderable charm. The follow-up to 1968's equally bouncy THE AMAZING NEW ELECTRIC SOUND OF JEAN-JACQUES PERREY, MOOG INDIGO sounds alternately like Spike Jones without irony, various period commercial jingles for products the world didn't need, or an easy listening pop album gone completely bonkers. High points include the title tune, a funk excursion in which Perrey coaxes his synthesizer to produce a credible simulation of a barking seal, "Soul City," which has more wacka-wacka guitar than anything this side of an Isacc Hayes album, and, of course, a de rigeur "Flight of the Bumblebee" in which the titular electronically enhanced bug sounds more than usually cheesed off, perhaps because Perrey forgot to credit Rimsky-Korsakov and added an intro ripped off from the Zombies "She's Not There." A genuine hoot.

CONDITION:

SLEEVE – EX+  Full glossy laminate, still stiff and clean with no splits or tears, only minor creasing on spine and on front near opening.

RECORD – VG. Has been played a lot and shows visible marks and spindle marks on label, but is a loud, dynamic pressing and sounds great.

RECORD GRADINGS

M = Mint

Must be in perfect condition with no audible or visible defects whatsoever. The record and cover/sleeve should be exactly as brand new.

NM = Near Mint

Almost mint but has one or two minor visible marks on the cover/sleeve or surface with sound quality remaining perfect.

EX = Excellent

Not quite perfect. There may a slight chance of minor deterioration in sound quality. The cover/sleeve may show slight wear.

VG = Very Good

The surface and cover/sleeve shows visible signs of wear due to the fact that it has been played on a regular basis. There will be some audible surface noise but it will not effect the listening experience.

G = Good

The sound quality has deteriorated due to having been played often. The cover/sleeve and surface will show considerable signs of wear and tear with some possible damage.

F = Fair

Has been neglected, but is still playable. There will be major audible defects such as loud clicks or jumping. The cover/sleeve maybe badly damaged.

P = Poor

Technically playable, but with serious deterioration in condition and sound quality. The cover/sleeve will be badly damaged.

VP = Very Poor

In terrible condition and absolutely unplayable. Would only be of use as a last resort to complete a collection.
