Description

Here is an extremely rare original 78 rpm shellac test pressing of Rhythm 1775 “Roughest Place In Town (Tin Pan Alley)” b/w “I Wanna Know.” James Reed--not to be confused with the famous Jimmy Reed--was an Arkansas-born bluesman who remains fairly mysterious aside from the handful of sides he recorded in the ‘50s. As you can see from the pics I've posted, the matrix numbers are 1775-A and 1775-B respectively (the lesser known “I Wanna Know” actually being the A-side). Both labels are blank aside from the handwriting (which incidentally refers to him as "Jimmie Reed"). The disc has no chips or cracks and no warp, but lots of needle marks. Strong gloss and remarkably clean playback considering the scratches. I suppose it’s about a G+ that plays far better than it should. As far as I know, the few original copies of this single that have surfaced over the years have nearly all been from the 45 rpm pressing. The audio linked below comes directly from this copy:
