·       JAMES BROWN -  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE -  ORIGINAL 1958 KING RECORDS MONO LP 610 WITH MONSTROUSLY RARE ORIGINAL ‘LEGS’ COVER.

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       ORIGINAL BLACK "CROWNLESS”  KING MONO LABEL WITH SILVER PRINT

·       (PLEASE NOTE: ALTHOUGH THE RECORD IS TECHNICALLY A SECOND PRESSING (BASED ON THE SIZE OF THE LETTERING IN THE LABEL'S LOGO), THIS IS FOR ALL PRACTICAL PURPOSES A FIRST PRESSING BASED ON THE PRESENCE OF THE DEEP GROOVE WHICH BETRAYS THE EXACT SAME PRESSING AS THE FIRST; IF  THIS WERE A SECOND PRESSING, THE RECORD WOULD NOT HAVE THE DEEP GROOVE; IN ANY EVENT, IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT THIS IS A CERTIFIABLY FIRST, WITHDRAWN VERSION OF THE COVER, THE PRESSING GENERATION OF THE RECORD IS MORE OR LESS IMMATERIAL AND VERY MUCH A MOOT POINT; MISMATCHED RECORDS/COVERS WERE ONE OF THE TRADEMARKS OF KING LABEL DURING THE TRANSITION FROM THE FIRST LABEL TO THE SECOND (ROUGHLY 1958-1960) AND SUCH COMBINATIONS ARE VERY COMMON)

·       ONE OF THE RAREST RHYTHM & BLUES ALBUMS IN EXISTENCE AND THE  TRUE HOLY GRAIL OF SOUL COLLECTING; NEAR MINT COPIES OF THIS MONSTER RARITY ARE ALL BUT UNKNOWN, AND THIS COPY IS PROBABLY THE WORLD'S BEST-PRESERVED SPECIMEN: THE CONDITION OF THIS COPY IS NOTHING SHORT OF BREATHTAKING

·       IMPORTANT NOTE: KING LABEL WAS NOTORIOUS FOR ITS CHEAP AND SHODDILY CONSTRUCTED AND ASSEMBLED COVERS, WHICH WERE EXCEPTIONALLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEAM-SPLITTING AND WEAR- AND- TEAR. WE CAN PROBABLY COUNT ON THE FINGERS OF ONE HAND (AND STILL HAVE A FEW FINGERS LEFT) ALL THE KING COVERS MADE BETWEEN 1955 AND 1970 WITHOUT ANY SPLIT SEAMS WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED IN THE PAST 50 YEARS OF COLLECTING (MANY APPEAR TO HAVE LEFT THE FACTORY WITH SPLIT SEAMS!!!); TO FIND A SPECIMEN WITHOUT ANY SPLIT SEAMS WHICH IS 60 YEARS OLD  - LIKE THE ONE YOU ARE JUST LOOKING AT - IS NOT ONLY UNBELIEVABLE, IT IS DOWNRIGHT SURREAL.  THESE THINGS SIMPLY DO NOT EXIST.THIS IS A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED ORIGINAL COVER WITHOUT ANY SPLIT SEAMS - POSSIBLY THE ONLY SUCH COPY IN EXISTENCE

·       RARE MONO PRESSING, MANY TIMES RARER THAN FAKE (“ELECTRONICALLY RECHANELLED”) STEREO

·       THE ORIGINAL ‘LEGS COVER'; IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       DEEP GROOVE PRESSING

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       ORIGINAL GLOSSY, LIGHTLY LAMINATED COVER

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you'll get.  GUARANTEED!)

Though James Brown and His Famous Flames had scored an R&B Top Ten hit in 1956 with "Please, Please, Please," and Brown's next nine singles for Federal Records flopped but the next, "Try Me," his third single of 1958, scored. That was when King Records (Federal's parent label) assembled this, Brown's debut album, out of some of those singles sessions. You can hear the sound of a group and its enthusiastic singer looking for a hit, sometimes in the rock & roll of "Chonnie-On-Chon" (1957) or the 1956 B-side "I Feel That Old Feeling Coming On," sometimes by remaking "Please, Please, Please" under another name, such as "I Don't Know" (1956), sometimes by tackling Coasters-like novelty material such as "That Dood It" (1958), sometimes by aping the smooth Sam Cooke, as on the 1958 B-side "That's When I Lost My Heart," and once by rewriting "My Bonnie (Lies over the Ocean)" as the 1958 B-side "Baby Cries over the Ocean." (...) The album presented the sound of a major star-to-be in search of his sound.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMANN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

Why Godfather of Soul (or someone at King records) decided to change the original cover of his first album is unclear; either it was too suggestive for the Eisenhower's era, or he simply did not find it sufficiently supportive of his big Ego (he replaced the original cover with the one showing him in a crooning pose on the front cover). Whatever the reason, the change in covers created one of the biggest rarities in the hobby. Copies of the original "Legs" cover, which we are offering here, have been known to change hands for more than $2,000.00. This is the item of such historical significance that missing out on it would be a major act of foolishness. Don’t fail to grab (by the leg!) this insanely rare piece which is only offered once in a blue moon. This is probably the very first "Soul" album, as we have come to know this genre today, and - as such - a rarity of major proportions

·                   CONDITION:

·                   RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          “Legs” cover version of this album is much rarer than the subsequent “concert pose” version of this album. We estimate that the latter outnumber the former by a ratio of close to 300:1

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS A RARE, QUICKLY WITHDRAWN “LEGS” COVER)

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 2 (back side)

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam  and spine (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
