Label Conditions: All four clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks ranging from very light to a little above light. All are fine and faint and show little and all indications are this set has only been lightly played.

Cat Number: UAD 60037/8.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 125 / 115 grams. Around average for this album and it’s era.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: this sold fairly well in the UK acually peaking at No 9 but was a relative failure in the US only just breaking in at 179 making copies there far harder to find. Never easy to find with a decent cover for sure, a 36 x 24 inch poster style with two delicate inner sleeves. The difference with this copy is it includes the very rare large insert sheet which is guaranteed original. It only came with a handful of the originals and it only the second one I have ever seen. Highly elusive and seldom offered, this is a vital part of this double set for the real Hawkwind fan. Also the main cover still includes the original £3.10 price sticker, that is also scarce, most were removed and again, only came with the earliest covers. With these two key features, this can be considered pretty rare.

Brief Info: One of my favourite live albums of all time – Hawkwind never sounded better than on this live acid-rock space-trip. All the early classics are included and with singer Bob Calvert on board, it gave them a new dimension. A stoned-out double set recorded in Liverpool and London – this is largely regarded as Hawkwind’s best ever album and the cover is regularly voted highly as one of the best ever – slight shame it was not more sturdy. Featuring Lemmy on his grinding bass – play this album loud for full effect, this is the ultimate space trip. Turner’s electrically treated reeds and splintering guitar from Brock and King’s pulsating rhythm, no-one this side of the cosmos sounded like them. It must have been amazing to have been there for this, unfortunately I missed out, but saw them several times starting in 1976 after the famous dancer had left. Visually they were stunning live, mind-bending light shows, volume and at this time, the famous Stacia danced to the pulsating rhythms, often as nature intended, she was a formidable lady and Hawkfans adored her. She joined the band in 1971 and stayed until 1975, a six feet tall lady apparently with a 52 inch chest, she was an integral part of the band’s stage shows in this, their classic period. She wore few clothes, often appearing with none and was decorated in luminous paint and swayed and writhed to the loud electric mayhem. Such a shame there appears no video footage of these live shows from this classic period. Spectacularly packaged in a huge poster cover and including two colourful inners, these are more often seen in very poor conditions and few survive really intact. The cover here, as usual, has some wear, but relatively mild compared to many and those two inners are in superb conditions. If anyone truly has one of these that looks almost like new, treasure it, because it will be one in many thousands as most suffer badly, so many were wall-mounted and practically all get crushed in storage. Both records play well with little unwanted, and that is far from guaranteed as pressing quality often was variable – being issued in 1972, the reason fairly obvious. Often purchased by certain types of the times, rarely hi-fi buffs and played into the ground while enjoying recreational delights. My first ever copy to include the very rare large insert sheet too, very few will ever include it. A rare opportunity for sure.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High+: spectacular but a flimsy poster cover that is usually seen badly ringworn, tatty, torn and often mounted or repaired. Single thickness card that has little chance of long-term good looks, that’s simply being honest.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this has far less rubbing and stressing to the vulnerable folds compared to most I have seen. Please remember just how fragile this is, made even more so with two records inside. Single albums with these poster covers are bad enough, but TWO, makes longevity for this one perilous and difficult. A huge poster-style cover made with quite thin, single thickness card that opens to around 3 x 2 feet (36 x 24 inches). Unlaminated, matt finished and printed and made in England. This original includes the scarce original manufacturers price sticker and both inners. Also the highly prized and sort-after large insert sheet which is guaranteed original, NOT a repro. Do not underestimate how rare this insert sheet is.

Cover Appearance: All faces look really clean and attractive and any wear is minimal and light with few creases. Most-all of any present on the edges or corners as fine hairlines. The front and back will always be the most vulnerable to ringwear but any traces here are very light and faint indeed with minimal ink removal. A fine arc trace is need on the front near the top. Bright and vivid colour is retained on all faces and all remain clean. The folds are solid and unstressed and importantly, intact. Invariably and practically unavoidably, there is some rubbing to the edges, corners and folds but all are intact with no repairs. Most seen are simply rubbed or eroded away but not the case on this one, it even retains a semblance of shape and not dead flat like most-all found these days, the spine still semi-erect and not totally flattened and importantly, ALL the spine text matter is fully present and unworn as is most of the graphic. This one has been folded reasonably squarely, many are way out of shape, and when fully closed and folded correctly, this is generally square and neat, but not totally flush or parallel and few will ever be. The early ones are often seen with substantial sticker tears as many wanted that price sticker removed – some considered it to spoil the artwork of the famous graphic, but now over the years, the more discerning collector wants this scarce sticker for completeness. This sticker has remained little short of pristine and has never been picked at or removed and it is as clean and fresh as when issued as I hope my close-up picture shows. The outside exposed corners have rubbed a little but far from excessive like many, few will escape this as a minimum, this was not a cover made with longevity in mind, few will even look this good these days, most a mess and literally falling apart. It can be argued it was designed as a poster and many used it as such. This overall, is a solid excellent example, not connoisseur standard but most collectors will enjoy it I feel.

The Inners: MINT(-) / EX(++): the best pair I have seen for ages. These were never lined and both look fantastic being ultra clean and fresh with all edges intact with no repairs. These are a matching pair with the rarer external flipback construction. The only difference, one is a little heavier than the other. Both have the angled shapes corners and deep recessed top opening. Not all these were made the same, some had rounded corners with no flipbacks. One is totally uncreased, the other has light creasing near the top entrance edge, with no ringmarks, they hardly get much better than this with incredibly fresh and vibrant colour retained with no splits or tears. The bottom corners are vented in manufacture, you will have to look a long time to find these better.

The Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): a double folded large insert, printed both sides, it measures 15.5 x 22 inches. This is in superb condition given all the facts. Printed on thick paper, not card, this has aged little. A small, faint stain mark on the front is only minor blemish worthy of note. All folds strong with no splits or tears and barely a crease to be seen. I truly regard this as one of the rarest inserts I have ever offered with any album on Ebay. So few were included with this set and finding one better will prove immensely difficult.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual pair that are very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A pair played very little on all the evidence with any surface marks or hairline traces tiny, very few and faint. All four playing surfaces look fantastic and without doubt, these have been modestly and carefully handled. So many copies of this albums were purchased by fans who were rarely hi-fi connoisseurs, thus many are seen trashed and in very poor condition. This is light years from that and both records are visually impressive, they should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This double set will take you into the next dimension: both records play up to their very fine visual grading for most all with little to fault. Rarely purchased by the more discerning high-fidelity sound purists but fans of a certain type and few survive this clean. Well recorded and exciting with a production that is perfect for their brand of music, raw and often loud, but most of all, exciting. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no significant pops or clicks noted. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and faint. A little at the start of side four fades away quickly and the odd trace on the very quiet passages on ‘Sonic Attack’ are near impossible to avoid being all vocal, few will ever play this totally silent. Just enough to remind you are listening to a 38-year-old record, but overall, this is a very fine clean pressing and clearly, lightly played. Typical of this classic era Hawkwind, most is loud. Few copies will outperform this quality UA pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: A very fine copy of this highly unforgiving set. The cover is excellent, not pristine – sometimes allowances have to be made for ones like this – the inners exceptional – both records clean with mainly superb sound. It can be argued the star piece of the set is the very rare insert sheet, simply for it’s elusiveness to show up often. It’s a piece for the serious fan for sure and it will be hard to find better. So a strong all-round copy and do not underestimate this one found as such.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
