Description

OEDIPUS

You are bidding on scarce & desirable Gate 5 Records Issue D of Harry Partch’s “Oedipus” based on Sophocles’ “Oedipus the King”. Partch wrote his own text version as he describes in the liner notes on the back cover “as text which is spoken not sung but are a harmonic part of the music. The musically inflected words are a little different from ordinary speech, except as emotional tensions make them different. Assertive words and assertive music do not collide. Tone of word and tone of instrument combine in a compact expression, each providing it’s singular ingredient.” Partch’s Gate 5 Ensemble performs with odd instrumentation ranging from Cloud- Chamber bowls to adapted traditional instruments.  Gate 5 records (Harry Partch) are quite scarce because distribution was only through Partch himself.

Record appears Near Mint. After carefully play grading the record I found that it played fine except Side 2, Track 4 has a few ticks to the beginning of the track. The jacket is in Very Fine condition with only slight ring abrasion to the top & bottom of the front cover and a small sticker to the upper left corner. All in all a scarce record in excellent condition & a fine work by this wonderfully eccentric and important American avant-garde composer.
