Description
Fairport Convention “Tour Sampler” 1975 Island Records ISS2
During September 1975 Island Records pressed 500 copies of a Fairport Convention Sampler LP aimed at Radio Stations. The band were about to do a 24 date tour of Britain during October and early November. The cover calls it the Tour Sampler but the record label actually says “Radio Programming Sampler”. Copies were never sold to the public but a few were given to the New Musical Express for use as competition prizes.
Over thirty years later, because of the small number pressed, this has become a very rare item.
Vinyl
Near Mint. In fact only the faintest of spindle marks show that this has ever been played. The surface is clean and unmarked. I found minimal surface noise. The sound quality is excellent, and the 150gm pressing has clearly been carefully mastered for high quality replay by the radio stations. The mastering engineer’s name “John 2” is just visible in the dead wax on side 1.
The pink rimmed label is clean with only a few faint spindle marks.
Sleeve
Island made sure that the radio stations got a decent piece of vinyl, but they economised by producing an unlaminated cover on thin white card,. This has not aged well it looks a little worn and a little dirty, but on close inspection this turns out to be mainly discolouration with age, which can also be seen on what looks like the original paper inner sleeve.
There are no tears or splits, but there are mild signs of wear to the edges and spine. There is slight creasing to the top corners (1 cm dog-ears, each only visible from one side of the cover) and minimal creasing to the bottom corners. There is a little ring marking on front and back and a small mark on the front. (See picture)
The name “Glick” has been written lightly in ink, in small, very neat letters near the top right hand corner of the back.
Overall, considering the cheap materials used and its age, this cover is in very good condition. Comparison with some of those shown on www.popsike.com shows it has survived well.
