Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format. This ‘first pressed’ format copy has no EMI logo and includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on the rims. Later pressings included the small boxed EMI logo and the text was changed to EMI Co Ltd. (please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks quite few and light as seen under angled light. This one of the earliest copies I have ever seen and it appears only very modestly played.

Cat Number: SHVL 777.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. This somewhat above average – later repressings were usually considerably lighter.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: The earliest pressed ‘pre-EMI’ copies are scarcer and are less easy to find compared to the later repressings which are relatively common. This was a late pre-EMI issue and was not available for very long before the box logo was included, that said, it sold quite well. Also, what sets this impressive copy apart is the condition. So often played to near destruction, and why not?, this is a superb album and more than justifies it’s rock classic status. Finally, this copy has ‘1’ mothers and low single letter stampers on each side, this never easy as in terms of Harvest records, it proved popular than many at this time.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, their fourth and the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast in commercial terms. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all-time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the anthemic ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here however is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel-to-channel pyrotechnics with speed – a true classic for sure. Special mention here to for Lord’s superb keyboards, his recent death would have saddened fans and most rock fans. Keyboard players within heavy bands often do not get the praise they should – this man was VERY special indeed and helped give Deep Purple their more unique sound. This album sold well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a lowly 143 in the US) it has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. Often seen, but most being later pressings as popularity grew, the pre-EMI pressed originals often heavily played and ruined by less than sympathetic record players of the time. Clean, lesser played examples are more elusive and this is a lovely all-round copy that offers an attractive clean cover and impressive sound. Even the Harvest promotional inner is nice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being very conservative, and arguably worthy of the extra (+). A gatefold format, laminated front and back, the inside matt finished and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner that is also impressive.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a fine shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of any dulling, even when viewed under angled light. A small very fine lift on the back top edge left, it hardly even shows when viewed normally as do any ultra fine and light press marks on the front. The lack of creasing to either side is a major bonus and that famous artwork that retains rich deep colour will seldom be seen a great deal better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb and has barely anything of note to really fault. Minimal traces of handling to the revealing matt black areas, that on covers this great age, seldom seen.

Top & Bottom Edges: Smooth and straight with barely any wear at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Similar again, the merest hint of gentle friction traces being ultra critical.

Spine and Text: This copy has the wider style spine, the type that usually form central recess creases purely by opening. This causes the text to sink and makes it harder to read and so often, the laminate peels and many are seen devoid of any at all. This one has pretty much avoided all these issues and is very solid, straight with most of the laminate retained with just a very small peel near the bottom corner. The rest fully intact and strong. Minimal compression and all the text perfect and unsunken as seen in my close-up picture. Folded a fraction off-square so the edges are not quite parallel, a mere detail as they are very close. Finding these early-made spines much better than this will also prove difficult.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is very small and faint with just the odd tiny tip crease. The spine pair are little short of immaculate with superb shape retained with no dinks. All the right ones are pretty close too with very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of this very famous rock cover, no usually seen quite this clean and fresh looking. What really sets it apart is the lack of dulling the very shiny laminate, this can be held and enjoyed. One that should please many, if not most collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): actually looking way better, only marked down because the usual darkening of the seam adhesive. This is purely natural trait of glue this age and is rarely avoided. Clean and only gently aged which I actually think enhances these inners. Barely any noteworthy creasing and no edge splits or repairs. These inners promote the early, and in most cases, rarer early Harvest albums that most failed to sell, they always add a nice touch to the early-pressed copies.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: an impressive visual copy that is very clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks very light and faint as seen under bright angled light, I feel sure this has been only modestly played and mostly with care on a quality record player. This has no penetrating scratches and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive and genuine vintage pre-EMI label record plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but these play very well. All fans will know the intro to ‘Child in Time’ is gentle, so absolute silence is a big ask, but this has little to fault. Now into it’s 44th year, I feel any record this great age has almost earned the right to have the odd minor sound blemish, but only just the odd polite reminder with the odd ultra gentle crackle trace here and there – but it will take something almost extraordinary to better this significantly. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. No pops or sigificant clicks were noted and this gives an impressive account of itself, I consider this a fairly challenging album and few available very early pressed examples will better this I feel sure. The detail and dynamics of the early cuts always superior to later thinner copies, this has real in-built power and sonic delivery, especially if played on a quality system. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. Not quite for the perfectionists, but most heavy rock fans will enjoy this.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
