Rarity: Moderately scarce: this sold fairly well in the UK acually peaking at No 9 but was a relative failure in the US only just breaking in at 179 so harder to find. Never easy to find with a decent cover for sure, a 36 x 24 inch poster style with two delicate inner sleeves. So many seen heavily creased, torn and badly rubbed, the inners split and creased. Ringwear seldom avoided on these parts as well. These type of albums were rarely bought by hi-fi buffs and so often treated very badly. This a very fine all-round copy, the cover only gently worn, both inners superb and the records play well. A few gentle clicks on ‘The Awakening’ and any surface sound minimal and very brief here and there. This is mostly a loud double live album and the majority plays great. Like most Hawkwind albums, a few quiet passages, and never easy to find a ‘perfect’ example – even my own copy has a few minor blemishes. Overall, I feel many collectors will enjoy this acid-rock classic.

Brief Info: One of my favourite live albums of all time – Hawkwind never sounded better than on this live acid-rock space-trip. All the early classics are included and with singer Bob Calvert on board, it gave them a new dimension. A stoned-out double set recorded in Liverpool and London – this is largely regarded as Hawkwind’s best ever album and the cover is regularly voted highly as one of the best ever – slight shame it was not more sturdy, these large format poster-style covers rarely wear well. Featuring Lemmy on his grinding bass – play this album loud for full effect, this is the ultimate space trip. Turner’s electrically treated reeds and splintering guitar from Brock and King’s pulsating rhythm, no-one this side of the cosmos sounded like them. It must have been amazing to have been there for this, unfortunately I missed out, but saw them several times starting in 1976 after their famous dancer and Lemmy had left. Visually they were stunning live, mind-bending light shows, volume and at this time, the famous Stacia danced to the pulsating rhythms, often as nature intended, she was a formidable lady and Hawkfans adored her. She joined the band in 1971 and stayed until 1975, a six feet tall lady apparently with a 52 inch chest, she was an integral part of the band’s stage shows in this, their classic period. She wore few clothes, often appearing with none and was decorated in luminous paint and swayed and writhed to the loud electric mayhem. Such a shame there appears no video footage of these live shows from this classic period. Spectacularly packaged in a huge poster cover and including two colourful inners, these are more often seen in very poor conditions and few survive really intact. The cover here has less wear than most, and those two inners are in superb conditions. If anyone truly has one of these that looks almost like new, treasure it, because it will be one in many thousands as most suffer badly, so many were wall-mounted and practically all get crushed in storage. Both records play well with little unwanted, and that is far from guaranteed as pressing quality often was variable – being issued in 1972, the reason fairly obvious. Often purchased by certain types of the times, rarely hi-fi buffs and played into the ground while enjoying recreational delights. Not perfect, by a very solid and enjoyable copy that many will cherish.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this has far less rubbing and stressing to the vulnerable folds compared to most I have seen. Please remember just how fragile this is, made even more so with two records inside. Single albums with these poster covers are bad enough, but TWO, makes longevity for this one perilous and difficult. A large poster-style cover made with thin, single thickness card that opens to around 3 x 2 feet (36 x 24 inches). Unlaminated, matt finished and printed and made in England. This original includes the scarce original manufacturers price sticker and both inners.

Cover Appearance: All faces look really clean and attractive and any wear is minimal and light with few creases. Most of any rubbing on the left and right outside folds which has eroded a little of the text but the majority still intact. The lower half of ‘HAWKWIND’ has gone. The front and back will always be the most vulnerable to ringwear but any traces here are very light and faint indeed with minimal ink removal, a gentle arc on the front top and a mere hint at the bottom. The back has escaped. Bright and vivid colour is retained on all faces and all remain clean. The folds are solid and unstressed and importantly, intact with no tears or repairs, all edges guaranteed untrimmed. The original £3-10 price sticker is little short of perfect. This one has been folded reasonably squarely, many are way out of shape, and when fully closed and folded correctly, this is generally square and neat, but not totally flush or parallel and few will ever be, especially when allowing for inevitable spine edge flattening that is near impossible to avoid. The early ones are often seen with substantial sticker tears as many wanted that price sticker removed – some considered it to spoil the artwork of the famous graphic, but now over the years, the more discerning collector wants this scarce sticker for completeness. The outside exposed corners have rubbed a little but far from excessive like many, few will escape this as a minimum, this was not a cover made with longevity in mind, few will even look this good these days, most a mess and literally falling apart. It can be argued it was designed as a poster and many used it as such. The inside non-coloured faces are all superb and unworn. I have done my best to show this large cover fully open both sides, hopefully it will show enough information for any interested collector to judge.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELENT(++): the best pair I have seen for ages. These were never lined and both look fantastic being ultra clean, fresh and vibrant with all edges intact with no repairs. These are a matching pair with the rarer external flipback construction. Both have the angled shapes corners and deep recessed top openings. Not all these were made the same, some had rounded corners with no flipbacks. Any creasing minimal and both have escaped ringwear, any burring to the entance edge card minimal, there are no tears or damage. Never underestimate how difficult it is find these bright inner sleeves like this – often they are missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual pair that are very clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. A pair played very little on all the evidence with any surface marks or hairline traces fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. A very fine mark on the final song of side one emits a few very gentle and light ticks, this has always been a very hard album to find that will play ‘perfectly’ for all four sides duration. As stated, even my own copy has the odd minor blemish here and there. This splendid pair appear very modestly played and mainly carefully handled. So many copies of this albums were purchased by fans who were rarely hi-fi connoisseurs, thus many are seen trashed and in very poor condition. This is light years from that and both records are visually impressive, they should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This double set will take you into the next dimension: both records play up to, and mostly above their very fine visual grading with little to fault. Rarely purchased by the more discerning high-fidelity sound purists but fans of a certain type and few survive this clean. Generally recorded and exciting with a production that is perfect for their brand of music, raw and often loud, but most of all, exciting. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range and detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal – I have mentioned a few gentle clicks on side one, the odd sporadic click here and there also is hard to avoid totally. Any surface sounds are mainly gentle and infrequent – the odd brief traces near the quiet intros again hard to avoid but most of this set plays impressively and I would suggest way above average. Just enough to remind you are listening to a 40+-year-old record, but overall, this is a very fine clean pressing and clearly, lightly played. Typical of this classic era Hawkwind, most is loud. Few copies will outperform this quality UA pressing significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played only lightly and have survived their era well. Little overall spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. They could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total perfection is mandatory – and good luck with that for this most challenging of double albums.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
