I assume we will never know for sure why the Thin White Duke – probably at the very last moment – decided to change the original track listing of his Tour de Force (“Ziggy Stardust”) by deleting the cover of the Chuck Berry’s rockabilly anthem (‘Round and ‘Round, so capably covered by the Rolling Stones eight years earlier) and replacing it on the final, released version of the album, with one of the most uncharacteristic tracks on the album (“Starman”). We can only speculate that the inclusion of Starman was a compromise with RCA record executives who sought a hit single from the album (and, indeed, Starman was a hit single on both sides of the ocean). On the other hand, it is entirely possible that Bowie himself didn’t think that the oddball cover of Chuck Berry’s rockabilly classic would fit well among the sci-fi glam vignettes which dominate the album that, after all, is supposed to be a conceptual work, not a rockabilly revival piece.
Another theory, which makes even more sense, is that Bowie worked concurrently on a number of his future projects and albums and that the tracks recorded during the Ziggy Stardust sessions were split between this release (Ziggy Stardust) and his 1973 album (Pin-ups), with ‘Round and ‘Round originally planned for Pin-Ups, then for the Ziggy Stardust and then, ultimately, dropped from both. This is not some far-fetched theory: mind you, we know for sure, that “Sorrow”, Bowie’s 1973 single, was originally recorded during the Ziggy Stardust sessions and was initially planned for inclusion in the album, but ultimately ended up on his next release (Pin Ups), about a year later.
Whatever the case, we have a rare privilege of offering what surely must be the rarest Bowie pressing in existence: the original, abandoned blueprint of Bowie’s finest hour and greatest masterpiece, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, with one track missing and another track added. The bidders should note that the omitted track (‘Round and ‘Round) which appears on this pressing, did, in fact, appear – however briefly – on the B-side of Bowie’s 1973 single (Drive-in Saturday c/w ‘Round and ‘Round), but did not merit inclusion on Bowie’s album until 1982 when a European-only compilation (Rare Bowie) came out.
Oddly enough, when Rykodisc released a remastered and “reconstructed” version of the album in 1994 (with four bonus tracks, all ostensibly recorded during the Ziggy Stardust sessions), the label somehow failed to include “Round and Round”- a faux pas of cosmic proportions, if you ask us.
***
For its extraordinary contribution to the contemporary music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, songwriters and general public, or for some other inherent quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, show business professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, the legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice , Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton, Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). IMPORTANT NOTE: While this acetate is in a beautiful state of preservation, we do expect bidders to understand that the aluminum-based, shellac-coated acetates can never be graded by using the exact, same stringent standards used by collectors for modern long-play, hi-fi LPs or singles. The buyer – if not familiar with acetate (reference) recordings - should be cautioned that these discs were intended for brief, limited use only; they were meant to be played only a few times, then discarded or destroyed. In view of this, the surface layer of the disc is manufactured in such a manner that it will wear off pretty quickly, even under normal conditions -- and specially if not handled with due care. Each subsequent playing increases wear and tear of the disc’s surface layer and diminishes the disc’s playability. This disc appears to have been unplayed recently and the grooves are still well-formed and fully visible.
This acetate is in about VG++ TO EXCELLENT (just a notch below NEAR MINT) , with some minor and superficial scuffs on the surface. Absolutely NO part of the shellac (surface layer) of the disc is missing, and the surface layer is NOT dented, chipped, broken or otherwise compromised.
ON A SCALE FROM 1-10 (where 10 is the best), WE GRADE RECORD AS 8
THIS IS A NO-RESERVE AUCTION!
