Over the years, my views on melodic hard rock has changed, and had it not been for this, I suspect I had not bothered checking out this vinyl at all. However, I must admit that playing loudest, fastest and having endless guitar solos towards the end of every song is not what really counts, as several recent album discoveries have ably demonstrated to me. [Anita Skorgan’s “White Magic” and “Basic” albums, just to name two.]

“One Step Closer” sees Dag Lauvland backed by much of the Norwegian session player mafia: Marius Muller [guitars, producer], Geir Langslet [keyboards] and Per Hillestad [drums] all feature prominently, and musical comparisons can be drawn to artists and bands like Aina, mia,thowsen, lava and guys in disguise . Ranging from ballads to mid-tempo tunes, and blessed with a production that also showcases producer Mullers excellent guitar playing, this album gets quite Westcoast-like. Vocally, Lauvland is not a million miles away from Eddie Swartz, John O` Banion or John Parr.
