Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, almost as made with any spindle marks tiny, few and faint. Not a label I have seen before, but I do not sell US albums often.

Cat Number: MFS-12003.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams.

Country of Manufacture: USA.

Rarity: Scarce (at least). I cannot imagine this one sold in any great numbers and few examples will be seen outside America.

Brief Info: A somewhat obscure and rare album by a band formerly known as Five Sounds that initially included Joe Sealy, a keyboard player. They released two singles in 1965 and 66 that did chart in the United States. For this one-off album, they changed their name to Central Nervous System and attracted the attention of Tom Wilson to produce it. Wilson at this time was producing records for Bob Dylan and Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Eddie Kramer was the engineer, famed for his work with Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones – all far bigger names and acts than this little-known band. So-much-so, this was not issued in the UK and finding this will never prove easy. They split soon after issue in 1969 and the album had little chance to find an audience. Varied material that includes some impressive fuzz guitar and reeds, but destined to disappear in the mist of time.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: US covers are prone to all forms of wear and damage. Being an imported copy, this has the almost mandatory hold punch on one corner.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: not taking into account of the hole that is seen on the majority of imported US covers from this period. A single thick card cover with no laminate. Brittle and fragile, these do not wear well unless kept in cottonwool. The back has the usual paste-on style panel. Printed and made in the U.S.A.

Cover Front: Reasonably mildly aged with some fairly light grubbiness and light marks, but given the facts, not at all bad and still pretty good looking. The hole punch can be seen on the bottom left corner – a typical treatment given to imported or deleted records at this time. Little rubbing and hardly any creasing, certainly elusive and one for collector of the seldom-seen US bands of the late 60s.

Cover Back: All similar again with the odd small stain and rub traces on the unforgiving back panel.

Top Edge: The left corner has a moderate size rub, mild surface cracking but intact. Most collectors will know just what US edges are like - seldom seen without splits, often major.

Bottom Edge: Some cracking and one split near the right corner I decided to repair as carefully as I could. This done to stop it splitting further. All is now solid and should hole up with careful handling and storage in future.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite sharp (for thick US card) with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The ends have rubbed which is hardly a surprise. But the spine itself is very solid, straight and uncompressed. A little natural crinkle that is usually present from the beginning but unsplit and little worn. The text is pretty much all present with any rubbing to the characters very light and minimal.

Corners: The top of the spine has rubbed to a moderate level. The bottom spine one has rubbed only fairly lightly. The right pair show very little wear, and overall, fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A reasonable example of a delicate and unforgiving cover. An imported over 40-year-old US item will seldom look anything like new, and this doesn’t. But the record itself is a far different matter. For those who collect this more obscure American material, finding high grading copies is hugely challenging, especially outside the States. So compromises have to be made sometimes. Not for the more discerning or purist collector, but with all considered, this is more than respectable and maybe I am not doing it full justice. This came to me inside a plain white inner that looks little aged at all. I cannot say with any certainty if it is the original or not, so will not dwell upon it too much.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still, this looks little played. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks few, light and quite faint as seen under angled light. US records seem to me made with soft vinyl that tend to mark more easily, so I consider this vintage record quite exceptional. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarely-seen record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A quality recording by Wilson and Kramer and this copy does it full justice. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive and entertaining record. This disc will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
