Beatles Yesterday & Today Mono Third State (Peeled) Authentic Butcher Cover LP

Here is a “PASTED-OVER” BUTCHER COVER THAT HAS BEEN PARTIALLY PEELED for someone who may want to add it to their Beatles or vinyl collection.

Here are the details:

• “YESTERDAY AND TODAY” LP by THE BEATLES

• This LP is Capitol Records T 2553.

• This LP was issued June 20, 1966.

• This LP is a MONO (Monaural) LP which is designated by the letter “T” that precedes the catalog number on both the cover and the labels.

• Clearly, this is a 1st MONO (monaural) PRESSING, because it was issued with the original “Butcher” cover slick.

• As you most likely know, the original cover issued for Capitol’s “Yesterday And Today” LP (known as the “Butcher Cover”) featured the Beatles wearing butcher smocks with slabs of red meat and decapitated baby dolls. Outcry from the public about it caused Capitol Records to stop production of that cover and recall the LPs already shipped to record retailers with that cover. To save money, Capitol then pasted “Trunk” cover slicks over copies of the LPs with “Butcher” cover slicks and again sent them out to record retailers. An LP with a “Trunk” slick pasted over the “Butcher” slick is referred to as a “Second State” or “Paste Over” BUTCHER COVER.

• An LP with the “Trunk” slick peeled off/removed to reveal the “Butcher” Cover underneath is referred to as a “THIRD STATE” or “PEELED” BUTCHER COVER. That is the LP in this auction.

• It’s tough to grade this “Butcher Cover” since it has been partially peeled. It came to me as you see it. It seems that GOOD CONDITION is the grade based on the tears that occurred with portions of the peeling. There is a tear at the lower right corner and at several places along the right side. There are also some small tears here and there (John’s right arm, Paul’s left knee, etc. It seems that there is fiber or fuzz (remaining from the old “Trunk” Cover) and old glue residue remaining on the “Butcher” slick. Someone may have a remedy or formula to complete the peeling process or leave it as it is as I have done. It definitely doesn’t look as bad as some peeled copies I’ve seen that were practically mutilated with large sections torn away in the peeling job.

  The REAR COVER has various stains. It also has moderate aging/foxing of the mostly-white rear slick.

• The VINYL is in VG to VG- CONDITION with numerous light surface scratches/hairlines/scuffs (but none are “feel-able”). The vinyl is very glossy.

• The REAR COVER has the number “6” printed at the bottom right corner which indicates that the cover originated from Capitol Records’ Los Angeles Pressing Plant.

• The VINYL was produced at Capitol Records’ Los Angeles Pressing Plant. This is indicated by the asterisk “*” in the trail-off wax. This is the symbol Capitol Records used to identify vinyl pressed at its Los Angeles Pressing Plant.

• Therefore, this Los Angeles-produced “Butcher Cover” and Los Angeles-pressed vinyl are correctly paired/matched.

• This LP also comes with its ORIGINAL ORANGE CAPITOL INNER SLEEVE that was issued with first MONO pressings of this Beatles’ title.

Maybe this PARTIALLY PEELED THIRD STATE BUTCHER COVER is one that you want to work on or leave as is to put on the wall in your vinyl room!!!
