Beatles Yesterday And Today Sealed First State Stereo "Butcher Cover" LP in GEM MINT 10 Condition (Capitol, 1966)  This was the ninth US release by Capitol Records, June 20, 1966. The title was based on the inclusion of the hit "Yesterday." As always with Capitol, the album was a mish-mash of songs and has no British counterpart at all: two cuts were from the UK Help! LP; four tracks from the UK version of their previous LP Rubber Soul; both sides of the single "Day Tripper / We Can Work it Out" are included; and also three songs from their not-yet-released Revolver album. The Beatles resented how their US record company did this as they always put a lot of thought and effort into the tracks and order on all their UK albums. The (in)famous "butcher" photo was taken early in 1966 by Robert Whitaker and actually had a title: A Somnambulant Adventure. Whether or not it was a Vietnam protest or a protest against Capitol "butchering" their records, the fact is that it became the official album cover and when first seen by DJs and record stores, there was an immediate and negative reaction to its graphic nature. Capitol recalled all the "offensive" albums and, in many cases, glued what's generally called the "Trunk Cover" over it (known as a "second state"). This is how most people have seen it. The original albums that were saved from destruction or the glue-over process, such as this one, are known as being "first state." Record pressing plant code on the reverse is "2" indicating that it was produced at the Scranton, Pennsylvania plant. Condition: GM-MT 10. As Perry Cox states in his LOA: "This example is a mint seal bearing no condition issues at all."

A very limited number of "first state" albums got out and were kept by journalists, radio stations, and record company executives. In 1966, stereo had yet to take over the marketplace and were sold at a higher retail price; it has been estimated that mono was produced in a 10 to one ration over the stereo version. There were certainly fewer of these that found their way into collections. Again, a much smaller number of these were never removed from their shrink wrap. An infinitesimal number of those still-sealed examples were kept in the beautiful condition of this one. Included with the album is an original one page Capitol Records letter of recall (text below) signed by Ron Tepper, along with the original "Special Delivery" transmittal envelope addressed to a Cynthia Winter in Sacramento, California. Copies of a letter with similar text addressed to "Dear Reviewer" are occasionally encountered. These all have additional text at the end asking the recipient to either discard their copy or to return it C.O.D. to Capitol Records (we wonder how many complied with that request). This is the only letter of its type sent to a Beatles (U.S.A.) Ltd. chapter president of which we are aware. Research shows that, starting on July 14, 1965, chapter presidents were all sent a complimentary copy of each new Beatles LP per Brian Epstein's request. This additional provenance and association with an early Fan Club officer makes this an even more exciting rarity.

June 14, 1966

Dear Beatles Chapter President:
In the past few days, you may have received an advance promotional copy of The Beatles' new album, "The Beatles Yesterday And Today." In accordance with the following statement from Alan W. Livingston, President, Capitol Records, Inc., the original album cover is being discarded and a new jacket is being prepared:

"The original cover, created in England, was intended as 'pop art' satire. However, a sampling of public opinion in the United States indicates that the cover design is subject to misinterpretation. For this reason, and to avoid any possible controversy or undeserved harm to The Beatles' image or reputation, Capitol has chosen to withdraw the LP and substitute a more generally acceptable design."

All consumer copies of The Beatles' album will be packaged in the new cover, which will be available within the next week or 10 days. As soon as they are, we will forward you a copy.
