Originally self-released in 2007, Justin Vernon's debut as Bon Iver would soon become something of a landmark release. Following a period of illness and increasing personal distress, Vernon headed for the hills. Or more specifically, a remote hunting cabin. There, he hunted for food and would eventually create a series of beautifully crafted folk songs that relied on little more than his vocals and a gently strummed guitar. The raw intimacy and emotion contained in the songs that populate For Emma, Forever Ago is perhaps what resonated with so many people when it was later released to a wider audience. It almost doesn't matter what Vernon is singing about; the pain of what he was going through at the time is palpable in the very bones of these songs. Which is not to say this is an album designed to instigate a depressive episode. In fact, the finely layered vocals create a choral effect that is human, beautiful and strangely determined. The Beach Boys would have been proud, even if they were unlikely to have created something quite like this had they traded the beach for a remote cabin. It's hard to overstate the effect that the likes of 'Flume' or 'Skinny Love' would go on to have on the folk scene, but the fact is that the lightning Vernon bottled on For Emma, Forever Ago continues to inspire and ultimately support people nearly twenty years after its release.
