" Evolution's Blend "
Radio Canada International RCI-375, 1977 Canada stereo
Texas born saxophonist, composer, bandleader and educator Billy Robinson (1939-2005) played with several greats (John Carter, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus) before settling in Montreal in 1970.
A big-toned tenor in the great Texas tradition, he soon appeared on albums by Archie Shepp ("Attica Blues") and Sadik Hakim ("Grey Cup Caper"), but it was while teaching at a local Montreal university that he recorded the obscure Evolution's Blend for Radio Canada International in 1972.
The album was never released to the general public, but it received a limited-edition pressing on vinyl through RCI's 'excellent 'Transcription' series. It's since been compiled and heavily sampled, but criminally it's still never been re-issued. A Pity ! ...'cause this is an absolute gem that features a couple of amazing jazz-funk break-beat monsters .....including the coveted "Quebec On My Mind" and "The Family" (hear it at the great "Music Is My Sanctuary" blog, below).
