TITUS GROAN
TITUS GROAN
DAWN DNLS 3012 (UK) 1970
distributed by Pye Records (Sales) Ltd.
A.T.V. House Great Cumberland Place London W.1.
produced by Barry Murray
1st and earliest UK disc / labels / cover
extremely heavy, thick and rigid record, 1st pressing labels with original text layout, original and earliest issue gatefold cover
the sleeve design (by Sue Baws) was later altered slightly, and the title on the lower rear cover almost completely airbrushed out
this ornate Titus Groan title ‘logo’ was moved - also printed in larger typeface - to the centre of the original stage photo panel
on later pressings, the original lettering outline is still visible, while the live group photo is even darker and more obscure
matrix / stampers:
D N L S 3 0 1 2 A – 3 * T 1 D N L S 3 0 1 2 B – 3 * T 1
correct original ‘shaped’ white paper poly-lined inner with pale grey lettering
PATENT Nos. 1,125,555 1,325,071 1,072,844 MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN
AMONG THE VERY BEST AND MOST CONVINCING
OF THE MORE SOUGHT-AFTER PROGRESSIVE ALBUMS
these guys could really play – no tedious ‘filler’ or jamming here
sharp, concise compositions with restless, although logical, arrangements
supremely memorable melodies and themes, tight musicianship
the unusual instrumentation adds unique atmosphere
a total gem of an LP – top 50 prog for sure
