The fans and aficionados of Billie Holiday may be forgiven for not knowing anything about the existence of this classic Lady Day album, or for having missed the opportunity to buy it when it was briefly available 60 years ago (assuming that they were alive and out of their salad days at the time); namely,  Eddie Heywood, The Lady’s “piano man” gets a more visually prominent billing on this album, with his name printed in large, block font; Billie Holiday’s name appears on the cover almost as an afterthought ; she is billed in a kind of casual fashion, her name appearing only on the blurry title of the previous Billie Holiday album (Billie Holiday sings, Commodore FL-30008) leaning nonchalantly against the stride piano’s note stand on the photo shown on the front cover. No wonder most folks  thought this was an Eddie Heywood album, and not a Billie Holiday’s one. Truth be told, Billie Holiday does NOT appear on all of the songs; but her rendition of classic “As time goes by” is simply to die for and worth the price of the album alone. No other version of this legendary standard comes even close.  Three out of four Billie Holiday tunes on this album were recorded on April 1, 1944 in NYC, the remaining track ("Billie's Blues") was recorded one week later, also in NYC.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in a hi-grade MFSL PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has some writing on its back side (session dates written in blue ballpoint pen, about 1½ x 1/4 inches in size)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)
