Cover, contents and labels: The Sleeve and any extra items such as a lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as 'unplayed' or 'sealed' should be described as mint.
EXCELLENT - Record: Shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.
Cover, contents and labels: might have some wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD - Record: Has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the odd light scratch.
Cover, contents and labels: Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items without any major defects is acceptable.
GOOD - Record: Has been played so much that the sound quality has noticably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.
Cover, contents and labels: May suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc.
FAIR - Record: Is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise - it may even jump.
Cover, contents and labels: will be torn, stained or defaced.
POOR - Record: Will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise etc.
Cover, contents and labels: Will be badly damaged or partly missing.
Bad - Record and Sleeve etc: Will be unplayable or might even be broken. Only used as a collection filler.
I play every item and grade accordingly - following the grading system given in the Record Collector but with some variations.
Unlike Record Collector I ‘shade’ gradings with a ‘PLUS’ or ‘MINUS’, so items may be listed as "VG PLUS" or "EXCELLENT MINUS". I also often grade how a record looks, as well as plays, for example "RECORD LOOKS VERY GOOD, PLAYS VERY GOOD PLUS".
