Ginsberg began working on setting the visionary English poet's famous collection to music on a pump organ in upstate New York in the aftermath of the Democratic National Convention in 1968 "Tear Gas Chicago." The recordings took place in June and July of 1969 in New York City. Produced by Barry Miles, the sessions included Ginsberg on harmonium, finger cymbals, and piano, Peter Orlovsky, Elvin Jones, Don Cherry, Herman Wright, John Scholle, Bob Dorough, Julius Watkins, and others. In his atonal, old-angel midnight voice, Ginsberg and accompanists fearlessly render Blake's poems with a musicality that that not only suits them, but fits them like a glove. You can hear the spirit of Blake bleating these out naked in his backyard.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY THOM JUREK, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

One of the great privileges I’ve had in my 36 years of living in New York was meeting Allen Ginsberg in person during an interview he gave for a New Jersey-based fanzine just a few months before he passed away. He was painfully frail and visibly sick, and one could see that the end was near. Despite being in almost palpable pain, Ginsberg was a picture of grace, gentleness and warmth. He waxed poetic, and at some length, about his Buddhist beliefs, particularly the impermanence of one’s identity and the fact that everything must disappear and dissolve in the larger Cosmic Self. Nothing, he claimed - one’s identity in particular -  is permanent and eternal. Everything must end and endure the great cosmic oblivion, he believed.

The only thing I regret is that I was so tongue-tied and (unnecessarily) intimidated by the presence of this guru of American counterculture that I only managed to utter a few words. I was paralyzed by The Man and his charisma. Oh, well. I am sure we’ll meet again some day, Mr. Ginsberg. Although, with my luck, I will probably reincarnate somewhere in Afghanistan…

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The album comes with its 1-page insert included

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).  Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
