Superb Ethiopian groove on the legendary amha label made famous by the incredible ethiopiques series. This, as most buyers of afro funk and afro beat will know, is one of the few Ethiopian titles to turn up with any regularity, along with Menelik’s own gorgeous, mulatu astatke arranged take on the Ethiopian standard ‘tizita’, the 3 Mahmoud Ahmed 45s on the Mahmoud label, and to a much lesser extent the Hitachi releases and the Bahta G Hiwot on amha. As everyone knows, you can whistle for 99% of Ethiopian releases, in any condition at all. None of the ethio stuff has ever turned up in massive quantity to my knowledge, unlike the very large amounts of albarika, aux ecoutes and other Benin and poly-rythmo related 45s recently turned up, and the musical quality is always so high that Ethiopian 45s are never to be missed. Arranged by the legendary Girma Beyene, arguably responsible for arranging the most serious of all the ethio funk killers, this is slice of Ethiopian funky soul at its finest. Meneliks vocal is arguably more to western taste than some of the big Ethiopian singers, since he has none of the sheer power of Mahmoud, nor the vocal virtuosity of Tilahun Gessesse, and instead rides the rhythm with his typical soft, almost conversational vocals. Gorgeous record, both sides are killing it. Cover is a bit mould-spotted, but beautiful swirled coloured vinyl is a superb lustrous ex+. You hardly ever see Ethiopian records in this condition.
