Description
You are bidding today on an absolutely unique item, a BPI gold disc awarded to Andy Rourke, who you'll know is the Smiths bassist, in receipt of the sale of 10,000 copies of the Smiths' self titled debut album. This is an OFFICIAL award, unlike many seen on eBay.
I aquired this in 2003, when I won a competition run by digital radio station BBC 6Music, where I had the opportunity to attend the Salford Lads' Club, as part of a series of events to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the band forming.. It was originallly purchased by the BBC from the site Morrisseymadness.co.uk.
The item is framed in gold with a red background, as you can see, and features a cassette sized image of the wonderful Paul Morrissey shot used on the album, taken from Andy Warhol's movie, Flesh. There is a union flag at the top left and on the bottom is a gold plaque which states what the award is.As you can see, in the centre is the vinyl disc. The item is in near mint condition, is clean and as it was when it was received by Mr Rourke 23 years ago. The item has hung on my wall and taken pride of place in my room since I won it.
So why am I selling such an item?
I'll try and spare you the sob stories, but fortunately/unfortunately, I've reached a point where I need to secure a deposit for a flat I've found, and consolodate various debts that aren't going to go away. It doesn't mean that my passion for everything Smiths and Morrissey has wained, just that I need to set a precident and find a little independence, and the money raised by this item will help me to do so. I remain steadfast in my love of the band, and hold very close the memories of a wonderful day at the Salford Lads' club.
This really is a piece of Smiths history - remember it's one of only 4 in existence, the others awarded to the three other band mates. It is the genuine article, something that isn't available very often. And extra special, of course, because it is the debut album, released in 1983.
Genuine bidders ONLY please. If you have any questions, would like to know anything else or would like to see more photographs, please feel free to send me a message and I'll see what I can do.
I am happy to accept credit/debit card payments, cheques or postal orders. I will aim to post the item as soon as I have received payment, and after cheque has cleared, due to the sentimental value of the piece. it is a very fragile item of course, so I will send special delivery. with full postal insurance.
I am ideally looking for a UK bidder, but may consider posting to Europe or worldwide. Please contact me if you're an international bidder.
Thanks once again and happy bidding!
