rare US mispressed version of this classic 2-Lp Rolling Stones
21-Song hits compilation featuring the legendary extremely rare
alternate mixes of "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" and has the
date 11-18-71 scrawled into the dead wax trail-off area on both Side 2
and Side 4 with "Shelley" scrawled on all but side 2 and has labels
that are blue with silver printing & 'script' London logos & this copy
also has the original heavy cardboard Gatefold Cover and also has both
of its original printed London inner-sleeves that have pictures of
other lp releases of the era on London including Stones records

this mispressed version is this is one of the rarest Rolling Stones
albums in existence and considered by many to be a "holy grail" for
Stones collectors not only because it was an error but because the
alternate takes are actually really great - they are rumored to have
been from the film "Gimme Shelter" but we do not know for sure

and not only are these versions totally different mixes – these are
in fact different takes altogether & you will detect a major difference
between the official versions and those included here within seconds
from the start of the songs & these versions have never been
officially released to the public, except on the small number
of error pressings that slipped through the cracks

and besides this being a mispressing, this collection is
included in many lists of Best All-Time Rock & Roll albums
even though it is a compilation and not a regular release

~ condition ~


record is in excellent condition* and has been fully
play tested and it sounds fantastic with just very faint crackle
and plays fully through with no skips, repeats or bad noise
and the vinyl is shiny & clean with only very light wear although
there is one unfortunate flaw* with this copy in that there is a small
pressing flaw in the middle of the very last song, which happens to
be the alternate take of "Wild Horses" and the flaw is a small 'bubble'
in the vinyl and while the needle plays through the bubble without
skipping or repeating on our turntable, there is some background noise
at this part of the song and it also makes soft 'thumping' sounds as the
needle passes through the bubble in the vinyl, but it does play all
the way through and is still almost enjoyable and the entire
rest of the lp plays & sounds great

cover is in excellent condition with bold bright printing
and has no seam splits, writing or markings and has just a
little light wear to the corners and a little ringwear

have the letters LH scrawled by them


~ review ~


this two-LP set is both a lot more and a bit less than what it seems
with 7 years' worth of mostly very high-charting influential & important
songs, leaving out some singles in favor of well-known album tracks
and in the process giving an overview not just of the Rolling Stones' hits
but of their evolving image evolving from loud R&B-inspired rockers
covering others' songs ("Time Is on My Side") into originators in their
own right ("Satisfaction") into originators with a particularly decadent air
("Get Off of My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") & then self-actualized
rebel-poets ("Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Midnight Rambler") and Shaman-like
symbols of chaos. On its initial release, Hot Rocks sold well, not only as
a unique compilation but also as a panorama of the 1960s and there are
also some anomalies in Hot Rocks' history for the collector -- the very
first pressings are said to have included an outtake of "Brown Sugar"
featuring Eric Clapton that was promptly replaced & overall
this is still an exciting assembly of material?


~ additional info ~


the alternate take of "Brown Sugar" is very raw sounding and
has the rhythm section pushed all the way into the foreground, to the
point where bass and drums are literally in-your-face and Bobby Keyes'
famous sax solo in the middle of the song is completely missing and
the lead guitar solo also appears to be missing; only Keith Richard’s
rhythm guitar is there, but Mick Taylor’s fretwork appears to be
either missing or is mixed-out beyond recognition and the vocals
seems to be similar to the released version and it is also
rumored that Eric Clapton plays guitar on this take

on the alternate take of "Wild Horses" the intricate guitar soloing
at the end of the song by Mick Taylor is missing & this version appears
to be somewhat shorter than the released version ~ but the most obvious
difference is in Mick Jagger's vocal track which makes it absolutely clear
that this is a completely different take with Mick singing in a wonderfully
dramatic, passionate and soulful manner and to our ears this version is
far superior to the regular released version. Here his voice is a cross between
Gram Parsons (some people thought that this was Gram Parsons on vocals)
Jerry Garcia and Billie Holiday ~ with Jagger really crooning his heart out
and this take also has a noticeable amount of echo and reverb and the
great sounding 12-String Acoustic Guitar & there are beautiful
piano parts played on a very primitive sounding type of piano

over the years there have been many different stories about how this
incredible rarity came about, from this being an attempt by then-manager
of the Rolling Stones Allen Klein to extract one final bit of studio material
before the band established their own label, to the Stones deliberately supplying
half-baked takes to  Klein, to the sheer incompetence of the pressing plant

Bruce Eder of the All Music Guide has given his thoughts on this
mispressing, saying he believes that this appears to be a simple case
of human error with the pressing plant inadvertently using a test pressing
or demo stamper which should have been discarded ~ and Bruce should
know since he worked for Allen Klein and London records during
his stint as a  consultant for the Rolling Stones
