Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1968 by Tommy Bolin as Ethereal Zephyr, they supported bands like Jeff Beck Group, Ten Years After and Led Zeppelin. Their debut album includes the classic Sail On which is reminiscent of Allman Brothers, Vanilla Fudge and Deep Purple. With wailing vocals akin to Janis Joplin and electric guitar blues in a similar vein to Led Zeppelin, it captured the mood of the time entering the lower reaches of the U.S. Top 50, was also released in the UK.
Their second album, which is regarded as a more mature and focused effort, was produced by Eddie Kramer. After it's release they went on an extensive tour with blues legend Albert King.
Candy and David Givens put together a new line-up, but when their third album failed to revive the bands fortunes, they called it a day. Bolin went to New York to play with jazz-fusion group Energy, and subsequently played on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album in 1973, before ultimately joining Deep Purple.
John Faris had earlier been a member of Us Too.

WITHOUT a doubt one of the finest unheralded West Coast psych albums of the early 70's, the final ZEPHYR album which blends a terrific array of dreamy soothing infectious tunes. A remarkable late night groover with vibrant flowing sonic sound sensations, a real 'grower' of the best kind, once this baby gets it's hooks into you, well...kick back a drift away with one of the great "lost albums" of the early '70's. It is the most accomplished and polished album of thee ZEPHYR efforts. Combining elements of West Coast psych, blues and rock with atmospheric sound effects and the eerily smooth & silky to wailing, Janis Joplin-like vocals of singer Candy Givens, the album sails along from song to song until, by the closing track, it has become evident that the sum is more than the individual parts; a Total Album, if you will. Still, the songs all stand out, particularly "High Flyin' Bird," which features Candy Givens' most impassioned singing. "Sierra Cowgirl" is a perfectly enchanting slice of cinematic pop, with a gorgeous feel that conjures up visions of Monument Valley and big Nevada skies. like the terrific black and white sights in sounds cinematography in the classic, HIGH SIERRA. "Chasing Clouds" and "Winter Always Finds Me" build to stunning climaxes. The musicianship on this recording is never less than perfect, without a note or beat out of place. The cover artwork makes a classic album cover, too. Unbelievable why this record is not more widely known, but judging by other collectors in-the-know, we are not alone in total admiration for this truly spectacular gem -- those who don't know or feel it, well too bad for them!
