DESCRIPTION

Willie Ruff - “The Smooth Side Of Ruff'” Columbia Records CS 9603 (Mono) from 1968. Hard to find Original Promo Only White Label MONO First Pressing Jazz Album from Willie Ruff, best known for his work with The Mitchell-Ruff Duo and Trio but also having worked with Miles Davis, Oliver Nelson, Blue Mitchell, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton and more. The backing band Features Ray Brown, Howard Roberts, Emil Richards and Ed Thigpen. Mostly Ruff original compostions including two on which he sings. On the Promo Only White with Black print 2-Eye Columbia Mono labels. As far as I know, this Mono version was only released to Radio Stations and was not available commercially. In the Original Cover with No Cuouts or Barcode.

CONDITION

The Sleeve is in nice shape. There is some slight basic shelf wear and corner softening/wear. There is a “Special Mono Radio Station Copy” sticker in the upper left corner which has had another sticker put on top of it and then partially peeled off. This doesn’t affect the cover itself or the “Mono” sticker and you might be able to remove the remnants of the 2nd sticker with some work. Super solid with no cutouts, splits, stains, tears, writing, etc. and would rate VG+. The Vinyl itself is in clean Glossy condition looking lightly played. If you look closely you can spot a few light scuffs and a handful of hairlines - no actual scratches i.e. something you can feel with a fingernail. VG+ visually and plays mostly EX or better but there is some light groove noise in a few spots and a couple soft tics - may just need a better cleaning than I can give with my Discwasher brush. The labels are Near Mint.

TERMS AND DEFINITIONS

Records are graded to the best of my ability to Goldmine Visual standards. If I provide Play Grades it is done as a courtesy but I only guarantee the Visual Grade. If you are not familiar with this grading system (or even if you think you are!), please check it out before bidding. I have summarized the important (i.e. I think everyone knows what Mint means) points below in Goldmine's words:

Very Good Plus (VG+): Record surfaces may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. Slight warps that do not affect the sound are OK.
Very Good (VG): Surface noise will be evident upon playing,... Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as will light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.
I stand by my grades but would like us to be on the same page so no problems arise. I have been selling Vintage Vinyl for over twenty years on the net and I can count the returns I've had on one hand so I believe my grading is fair and accurate. One important note, I try to grade to these Goldmine guides as best as I can understand and apply them. This gives us both a written standard to go by rather than having to guess. But.... it also means that I don't issue refunds over differences of opinion in grading i.e. "That's not MY idea of a VG record!" - I don't know what your standards are and, as such, can't grade to them. I guarantee that items I sell will meet my description, nothing more or less!
