Last time we heard Antony Mills and Freddie Cruger together as Wildcookie, Obama was still in his first presidential term, and the world was just that little bit simpler. Since then, however, the Homegrown label has matured and developed into the fine beast that it is now, and the duo's style is most certainly a darker shade of grey. They haven't lost their seductive, funky style, though, and the opening "What Would" is a delicious mix of anything remotely related to soul, while "Back Door" delivers a fine, electronic r&b slow-jam, and "Fly Is Now" is what soul sounds like on Saturn. This has to be one of the nuttiest, most diverse soul releases that will grace 2017, and the title track "Slave Music" will undoubtedly be imprinted in your mind upon first listen.
