WEST COAST POP ART EXPERIMENTAL BAND - VOL.3 A Child’s Guide To Good And Evil ORIG Reprise LP RSLP 6298 (UK, Stereo, 1968)

Happy to present Vol.3 of the WCPAEB’s 4 Lps (5 if you include ‘Markley: A Group). The story of the WCPAEB is a bizarre one, one which could have only been fully played out in the times in which they existed. It’s a story which starts, inspired by the Yardbirds and ends in hustling, unhealthy obsessions, chemically induced madness and internal ego battles. At the centre of it was the maverick lyricist yet musically inept Bob Markley - last heard of in an emergency ward, suffering hyper-dehydration, after drifting in a boat on a lake in baking sun - on the verge of meeting his Maker. Did he die?? No one seems quite sure, and so the legend continues…

I’m very happy to offer this uber-rare UK press of Vol III the seminal ‘Child’s Guide To Good & Evil’, seen by most as their masterwork and their only LP to see a full UK release.

This UK press is not often seen (I’m not gonna shout ‘Try finding another one’, just as another one appears on Ebay!!!) but it is one of the rarest albums on UK Reprise. This copy contains the completely silent end track “Anniversary Of World War Three” - 3 minutes of silent grooves, not always included on subsequent reissues.

The front laminated tri-flipback sleeve made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd is in a solid state with the following imperfections: 3 small thumb creases to the front; around ten small creases out from the spine; the beginnings of a 1-inch split to the top edge (not through the laminate); mild blunting of corners, a little wear to the bottom 2; one nick to the spine; very faint ring impression to the front only. Other than these there are NO tears, writing, hardly any feathering to the opening edges, no creases to the colour rear panel and no stickers or sticker pulls. All the flipbacks solidly glued down and the spine is solid and text is fully legible except for the ‘t’ in ‘Coast’. Overall maximum VG (Very Good) condition and it’s so great to have a UK flipback sleeve of this psychedelic milestone!!

The original three colour Reprise steamboat labels are in pleasing condition with no stickers or tears and only some small spindle trails on either side - I don’t think this has seen many plays, especially when you see the state of the disc itself. There is however some track indicator ‘stars’ written on 4 tracks on Side 1 and 2 on Side 2. These are pretty discreet and don’t detract too much from these classic labels.

The medium to heavy weight vinyl is a very flat and pleasingly sharp disc and is in great condition. Visually, there’s hardly anything to fault with near maximum shine. There’s one light hairline and maybe two or three ultra tiny (and I mean SMALL!) surface marks to Side 2, whereas I just couldn’t locate anything at all on Side 1. So that means no scratches, no scuffs, no embedded dirt, no scrapes, no fingerprints or dust pockets, no bubbles or craters. THIS LOOKS LOVELY!! Visually many would go Mint or near no doubt, but although it looks that way, I’ll say EX+ (Excellent Plus) knowing it has been played (but not much at all!). The playback is also thrilling with no major nasties to spoil your enjoyment of this weird soundscape. The best way to check the audio on this record is to check ‘Anniversary Of World War III’ the completely silent end track on Side 2. This plays near silent with just light crackle and one soft tick. There is a bit of surface static between tracks and 2 pops BETWEEN tracks 2 & 3 on Side 1. But that’s it - nothing else to report - no snap, clicks, pops over the music, no distortion, hiss or loss of clarity. Plays a true excellent. Brilliant!!

Presented in its original green Reprise company inner which has side splits, so a new inner will be provided as well.

In my view, one of the epoch defining USA Psychedelic LP’s in its much rarer UK press. Low start, no reserve!
