For years, the mere mention of this band's name had collectors salivating for more information about them: Who were they? Where were they from? Was there any more music they recorded still lurking in some dank dungeon vault somewhere? All that remained were the four tracks they contributed to ... compilation from 1970, put out as a San Francisco Sound Label's sampler. But of all the tracks on that comp, I.P.&P. were the only ones with no other releases on the label. To compound matters, R&R sleuths had been unable to turn up any concert posters promoting any of their appearances prior to the comp's 1970 release date. Of course, after its release, demand for appearances by this heretofore unknown band began to swell, and a stand-in act was hastily assembled to take advantage of it, even though they had absolutely no knowledge themselves of who the original band was. Well, the mystery has finally been solved, and RD Records in Switz. is at the forefront of this new info. The quick story is that a Seattle band called West Coast Natural Gas had relocated to San Fran to capitalize on that open and supportive music scene. The owner of the San Francisco Sound record label (whose name escapes me at the moment) offered them a contract for an album. The band duely recorded enough material, but were one of the few to actually balk at signing an unfriendly contract, and prompltly packed their bags and returned to Seattle. SFS did end up releasing a single credited to the band, but couldn't legaly issue the rest of the material. But legal hurdles hadn't stopped him in the past, and he decided to release four of the remaining tracks on his sampler, and credit them to a name he chose on a whim. This album here contains all of the tracks originally intended for that shelved LP, plus some earlier material they recorded in early 1966 back in Seattle, as well as two promo's they recorded. Musically, they were kind of "all over the place", but most of these tracks possess a strong west coast rock flavor. I feel there are three top tier songs here, with two of them also on the SFS comp. Most of the rest of the original album is strongly supportive of these three tracks, though not as psych flavored. At the lower end of the spectrum of track ratings here will be found the early material, which is composed of garage/folk covers, and also the promos, which are historically interesting nonetheless - the room was there, so why not add them? Overall, this might turn out to initially disappoint, especially if you were hoping for more tracks such as their exquisite "Hashish". But after a couple of listens, those tracks which are not on that par will reveal their own magic for the listener as well. Perhaps not essential, but genre fans should really investigate this for themselves.
