WELCOME TO NORWICH, A FINE CITY was one of the first and best of the local band compilations that appeared in the early 1980s in the aftermath of the independent DIY explosion.
Released in 1981 on the fledgling Romans In Britain label (which later launched the career of The Higsons), and named after the road signs which greet you as you enter Norwich, only 500 of this album were ever pressed. How many of those 500 sold, nobody knows….most of those copies are either lost, or maybe squirreled away on forgotten shelves by the musicians from the bands on the album. This record very rarely comes to light, and hence tends to exchange hands for foolhardy sums, well into three figures.
But in this case, it’s worth it…
Featured on the album are first steps by bands that went on to form the influential and idiosyncratic East Anglian independent scene of the 1980s, including The Higsons. And also some other great bands - some of which went on to glory, some back to the day jobs. But it shows the true experimental, energetic and innovative music that was fermenting in the far corners of England in those heady days.
And it still sounds really good!
This is a remarkably excellent condition copy of this very rare album.
Tucked away in my collection since its release, the record itself is in immaculate condition, only showing a few tiny signs of wear. I’ve just played it through – and there is not a trace of surface noise, not even between the tracks, and no jumps, pops or crackles. It really does sound as if it is brand new.
The sleeve is also in very good condition, with only a few age marks and a little discolouration, and a little bit of ringwear at the top.
All in all, you would be very hard-pressed to find a better copy.
