1994's "Chocolate & Cheese" is arguably Ween's finest moment in their career. You may be a little puzzled with Ween's unique brand of music if you've only heard albums such as "GodWeenSatan: The Oneness", "The Pod", or "Pure Guava". Those are their earlier album, which are masterpieces, but very much like "Mr. Bungle" or "Captain Beefheart", material like that can be kind of hard to swallow at first listen, or it might scare you away. The love for their earlier albums will come with how you feel about this album, or one of their more recent albums. The first time I heard "GodWeenSatan: The Oneness" I didn't like it; now it's my favorite Ween album (actually, all of their albums are too great to pick a favorite). After I heard "Chocolate & Cheese" I was hooked; and after getting into "The Mollusk" immediately after, the only way I can describe Ween to anybody that asks me about them, is that they're the greatest band on earth.

"Chocolate & Cheese" provides so much variety, that it is sure to hook you like a fish, no matter what your tastes may be. They have amazingly witty and unique songwriting. The vocals go from high falsetto notes, deep rumbling tones, Spanish vocal tones, country vocal tones, and an insane amount of vocal filters; all conveying that Ween is one of a kind from the get-go. Although Gene and Dean both play guitar, Dean tears it up on lead guitar, throwing in solos and stylish riffs throughout the album. All of these traits shows that Ween has true talent that is easily understood shortly after the album begins. Those of you that have heard albums like "The Pod" or "Pure Guava" can understand why a first time listener would dismiss Ween if they are scared off by songs like "Reggaejunkiejew". Another thing that makes "Chocolate and Cheese" more gettable at first listen is because it has a very classic rock feel to it. It is obvious that much of the guitar playing and vocals are influenced by bands such as Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Bob Seger, Queen, Talking Heads, Bruce Springsteen and Prince.

The reason that people love Ween so much is because you can't nail them down on a single genre or style. They may be labeled as Alternative Pop/Rock, Indie Rock, Lo-Fi or Comedy Rock, but they are much more multi-faceted than that (they even made a country album). Their music varies so much from album to album, let alone song to song. There moods vary as follows: Giddy, Ironic, Quirky, Rollicking, Freewheeling, Humorous, Raucous, Messy, Rousing, Rowdy, Trippy, Fun, Wry, Campy, Witty, Silly, Irreverent, Sprawling, Meandering, Uncompromising, Indulgent, Enigmatic, Gleeful, Reckless, Druggy, Joyous and Playful.

Some standout tracks include "Take Me Away", which has a classic rock feel to it, the creepy, but funny "Spinal Meningitis (Got Me Down)", the falsetto soul flavored "Freedom of '76", the crazed stomp of "I Can't Put My Finger on It", the psychedelic, but chill "A Tear for Eddie", "Baby Bitch" a wry and weird song about an ex-girlfriend, the very creepy "Mister Would You Please Help My Pony?", the pseudo-country style "Drifter in the Dark", "Voodoo Lady" the only song you probably heard in a movie before (Road Trip, Dude, Where's My Car), the epic story-telling "Buenas Tardes Amigo", the silly "The H.I.V. Song", and the British psych-inspired "What Deaner Was Talking About".

Ween - Chocolate And Cheese - Extrem Rare Doppel LP

"Chocolate And Cheese" hört sich an wie ein prächtiger Sampler; mal träumerisch, mal rockig, viel Blues und einige WEEN-typische mexikanische Einschläge lassen beim ersten Hören nicht unbedingt darauf schließen, daß alles von einer einzigen Band eingespielt wurde. Allen Songs gemein sind hingegen die Texte, die fast durchweg lustig, schweinisch und manchmal schon verletzend (HIV-Song!) daherkommen. Vergleicht man den aktuellen Output mit den Vorgänger-Alben ("The God Ween Satan" '91, "The Pod" '92 und "Pure Guava" '93), nehmen sich diese doch noch verspielter aus. Es scheint fast so, als hätten WEEN bisher nur ein wenig geübt, um nun den großen Wurf zu landen.
Wer hat WEEN schon vor "Chocolate And Cheese" gekannt? Wenige. Eigentlich nur passionierte USA-Reisende, denn bis zu diesem Release war es einfacher, Plutonium zu schmuggeln als in Deutschlands Plattenregalen auf ein Werk der Amerikaner zu stoßen. Aber nun kennt sie wohl (hoffentlich) fast jeder, allerspätestens, seitdem ein amerikanischer Musikkanal Videos von ihnen sendet.
So, und neulich waren WEEN zu Gast in Deutschland und gaben eine Handvoll Konzerte, auf die überall mehr als eine Handvoll zuviel Leute kamen. Und wir hatten nicht nur die Annehmlichkeit, Eintrittskarten zu besitzen, sondern auch einen Interviewtermin mit der Band, die, wie wir meinen, so gut ist, daß sie eine Revolution auslösen könnte. Nach dem großartigen dreistündigen Konzert saßen wir dann Gitarrist Dean Ween und dem Bassisten und Produzenten Andrew Weiss gegenüber.
WEENs zunehmende Popularität ist, mal abgesehen von der Qualität des neuen Albums, wohl auch auf den erneuten Label-Wechsel in den Staaten zurückzuführen, wobei "Elektra" eigentlich nicht gerade der Idealtypus eines Labels zu sein scheint, bei der eine so eigenwillige, kreative und vor Ideen übersprudelnde Band aufgehoben sein sollte. Ihnen selber ist das anscheinend recht wurscht, denn auf die Feststellung, besagtes Label sei ja auch das Zuhause von Pop-Ikone TRACY CHAPMAN, mußte Dean lachen und bemerkte mit breitem Grinsen: "Oh, it's good, as good as anything else." In Europa dagegen erscheinen sie auf "Flying Nun", übrigens als einzige nicht-neuseeländische Band (was sie bis vor kurzem selbst nicht wußten). Im Rahmen der Tour werden sie nun auch erstmals die Heimat dieses Labels ansteuern, worauf sie sich sichtlich freuen (Stichwort: "Mushroom Harvest"). Aber auch in Deutschland haben sie sich recht wohl gefühlt, weil vieles ganz ähnlich wie in Amerika sei: "Germans are on a similar level of Americans, Germans go on vacation on Hawaii and everybody hates them; Americans go on vacation on Barbados and everybody hates them. They come and just flip out their check-book. So mainly WEEN brings out the crassness of Americans", meinte Andrew Weiss, aber Dean fügte fast entschuldigend hinzu: "We're Americans, not intentionally, but obviously we ARE Americans."
In bezug auf die im Gegensatz zu ihren Vorgängern weitaus straighter klingende neue Platte wollten wir wissen, ob der jetzige Erfolg, zumindest in Europa, beabsichtigt gewesen sei. "It doesn't matter. WEEN is about all our songs. That's how it should be. I don't wanna play smaller audiences just to have more credibility. I want our records to get better and play bigger people", meinte Dean und schwärmte gleich von neuen Ideen, wobei er in eine minutenlange Fachsimpelei mit Andrew verfiel.
WEEN macht die Musik einfach nur Spaß! Im Studio genauso wie auf der Bühne, was auch eindrucksvoll zu sehen war. "We're trying to have fun. It sucks when you don't have fun, you never ever play a show that you don't have fun in, and that's any good. It's best when you get equal parts, you play good and you have fun and the whole thing happens. Studio and stage are both gratifying in different ways - you play a good show and it lasts 'till about an hour from now and maybe if it's really great 'till tomorrow morning. But if you record a good song, that's forever and ever and ever ...", sagte Dean mit einem Grinsen, zeigte uns noch stolz seine Blumen, die ihm eine Verehrerin zugeworfen hatte, und lachte.
