Walrus – Self titled album
Walrus were formed in the London area by Steve Hawthorn and sought to fuse jazz and rock. With a strong brass section, Walrus emerged as an eight-piece touring band in early 1970. Their similarity to the successful Keef Hartley Band led Decca records to add Walrus to their Deram roster in June of the same year. Their eponymous debut album followed that same December. Despite, or perhaps because of, this quick turnaround the album was not a success and by 1972, despite continuing to draw a strong live following, the band split up. The band ’s members largely disappeared into obscurity, with the exception of sometime drummer Ian Mosley who later joined Marillion.
This record has only been graded as ‘fair’ as it has not been well looked after. It has numerous marks as you can see in the fourth photo below. It actually plays better than it looks. It has a fair bit of crackle throughout but it doesn ’t jump, skip or stick. The crackle isn’t overpowering though and it is still a good listen. As this album is very rare I have decided to auction it as a ‘collection filler’ for someone. Do not expect it to look great or play perfectly!!!

The album is on Deram Records, SML 1072. Matrix side one: ZAL-10017.P-1W (stamped). Matrix side two: ZAL-10018.P-1W (stamped).
Released in 1970. UK pressing. Stereo.

Condition: (as Record Collector’s grading system)
Vinyl side 1: fair (has numerous surface scuffs/scrapes/scratches and plays with crackles throughout. Doesn ’t stick, skip or jump though).
Vinyl side 2: fair (has numerous surface scuffs/scrapes/scratches and plays with crackles throughout. Doesn ’t stick, skip or jump though).
Cover (front laminated): good (light corner, edge and spine wear, some creasing, small tear at bottom of the opening edge, yellowing on front, a bit scruffy looking).
I have tried to give my honest opinion as to the condition. I will give a complete refund to the buyer if they are not happy with the record.

RECORD COLLECTOR GRADING SYSTEM:
MINT: I very rarely use the mint grade. Only records that are still sealed or records that even under the strongest of lights are completely unmarked. Also covers that are unmarked/uncreased in any way and still look brand new.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is no lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.
